Worried about potential recession and layoffs...
Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Finally found THE one, after over a year of searching and trying out at least 5 different ones!
A nice comfortable office chair.

My criteria: mesh seat and back, arms, headrest
I tried cheap ones from Amazon. Expensive, second hand gaming chairs. Tried HM Aeron (second hand) and while I didn't like the bulk and the general design, I was sold on the mesh seating. I wanted to get the ErgoChair 2 from autonomous, but it doesn't have mesh seat.

This is my first ever grown up job. I am insecure.
You sound pretty insecure there, bud
You'll know it's coming. And be given opportunities to improve.
Hey OP, you’ll be ok. Chances are good that you’re smart enough, and if you sincerely care about your work (it seems like you do), you’ll be able to improve if needed. Take it easy and learn as much as you can.
The process is tied to either the mid year or year end process. You will receive a performance improvement plan (PIP) that documents the specific areas you must improve. You will check in with your counselor and if performance is not seen, at some point you will get a call to come in and talk to a Principal or MD. When you get there, they will have someone with HR with them. The P/MD will communicate the termination and then leave the meeting at which point, HR will take over in discussing the termination process.
OP you'll be fine. The thing to keep in mind is, your mgr would be an idiot if they expect 100% client ready deliverables from you on the get go. That out of the way, it is upon you to constantly try and get out of your comfort zone. (1) Volunteer to be the ears, i.e. take minutes on phone calls, (2) Volunteer to draw diagrams, build decks. Obviously under supervision. (3) Ask for feedback on your work, and most importantly, let not the same feedback be given twice in a row.
Just follow these logical common sense steps, and carry an attitude of constant learning with you. Also, on the side, try and build SM level expertise in automation using tools such as excel and R.
This is really a lot. You're not getting fired. Chill out dude.
OP I know how you feel. Keep your head up and remember that you're there to learn. They don't expect you to know everything right away and if you make a mistake, own up to it and be proactive at improving yourself. Show them that you want to get better and are open to regular feedback. My first few weeks on the project have been tough and stressful but doing my best to keep a positive attitude. You've got this 👍
I think attitude is everything at the analyst level. As long as you're eager to help and you're coachable, you'll be fine!
Get your work done on time and with quality/little review needed and you'll be fine. If someone is redoing your work consistently that's a clear sign
Congrats on the job
What's the termination process like @D2? Do they give you a severance package?
It's pretty hard to get fired. Keep trying your best and improving, and don't break policy or ethics rules. Ask for feedback informally and ensure you're meeting or exceeding expectations. You'll be fine.
Will they do it without giving you any indication of them thinking you are underperforming?
*asking you to step it up
Thanks, D1. Generally speaking, what do Analysts do for someone to say they are performing poorly?
At the analyst level, it's pretty damn tough to get fired. Even when times are tough, you wont be the first to be let go. It sends a poor message to the next year's recruiting class. And we would start losing talent to other companies. Slippery slope.
Thanks so much, everyone! This was very reassuring.
