Spend time with them and get to know them. Not much you can do to understand an accent other than hear it a lot
A lot of us struggle with this. Took me a while to train my ear so I could "translate" Indian accents to what I understood. Don't be afraid to politely ask them to repeat something if you need clarity.
K1, do you recommend also using a hulk hogan impression?
1 on 1:
Be direct but friendly: "Whoa, slow down brother! Let's talk step by step to make sure I understand you" 😁
And then help them keep the pace, talking step by step. Clarify each step you are struggling with.
In a group:
Try to clarify the big picture in the meeting, and then mention that you with side-bar with them for specifics after the meeting, then follow steps above.
I have trouble with American accents - too much twang. Just saying one side appears to have more patience than the other ...
Do the needful
You will get used to it quickly. Some of the best and brightest people I've ever worked with.
Some can speak very quickly (as do I) so it's fair to ask them to slow down a bit. Makes it easier.
You will get used to it. I'm a black man and I love working with Indians awesome people.
Email, and step by step, have them to send email with details before meeting
IM helps
I'm brown so I'm allowed to say this (white people, don't you dare) - watch a lot of Russell Peters and YouTuber impressions of Indian accents
I'm Indian myself and I oftentimes don't understand their accents either. I suggest asking them to slow down.
Russell Peters is a hack
E1, do you mean an impression of Hulk Hogan doing a K1 impression? Cause that could work.
🤷🏼♂️
Just be patient and listen closely. In a few weeks, you'll barely notice it.
Also understand body language. Head nodding and "yes" in eastern culture oftentimes means "I understand you" not "I agree". Be sure to follow with actionables
Love my Indian colleagues. Not sure why but the ones I've worked with are really passionate about delivery excellence and they are fabulous brand ambassadors- early adopters of new firm technologies and they geek out about new developments within the firm. I really enjoy it.
My father is English and he can't understand midwesterners haha.
IM or follow up with one on one until you get the accent.
