Next year I'd like to teach my students how to recognize when they actually need support and ask clarifying questions rather than just blurting out "I need help" or "I don't understand." Anyone have any helpful tips for this?

Some people put a checklist up in the classroom abd have students refer to the checklist before asking for help. Things like re-read the directions. Ask the person next to you... then if you still don't know- then ask for help.
Or put up specific questions- like I don't understand what this word means. I don't understand what I have to submit. I don't know what materials I am supposed to be using.
At the middle school level they really don't think like that- so it will have to be heavily modeled and visible at all times with strong expectations that they do those things first.

Love this idea!

I'm not sure that at the middle school level, they are wired for that. The stages of growth are not ready for that kind of critical thinking. I think that you have an uphill battle.

Creating a shared document for these is a possibility that will address some of these support issues while teaching some self-reliance. A classroom FAQ can be created from this. Involve the students as much as possible, so they learn to help each other and help themselves.

I don’t know but I’d love to hear other answers

I always say kids have to give me an option. So instead of “I don’t understand” it becomes “I put the citation here like this. I’m not sure about it.” I look at it and comment. The “I don’t understand” is just too broad.
