No hiring manager will admit to this for obvious reasons, but curious, how likely is it that age is discriminated against while job seeking?

Ageism is alive and well. I'm a 55yo software developer and I've gotten the "not the right cultural fit" response more times than I can count. I have no proof that all those rejections were age related, but when the hiring manager interviewing you is 38yo it's highly probable.

like

I'm 58 and I can no longer kid myself I look youthful. Get lots of interviews with great rapport and discussion only to get the "cultural fit" or "overqualified" feedback or, more often, ghosted. I'd be delusional if I were to try to convince you ageism isn't a factor in hiring.

like

I moved jobs when 55 and again when 57. Retired at 62 and was still being offered serious executive work. Personally I believe it’s about the energy and initiative you bring and less about the age you are

Very. With AI thoroughly integrated into the recruitment and resume selection process - even if no specific “instructions” aren’t given re: age - reading the job description “it” may eliminate older candidates. Therefore, if you haven’t already done it, REMOVE DATES from your resume. This works well when you update your resume from chronological to functional.

like

I think around 50 it starts to kick in, especially if you’re middle management

like

Disagree. Nobody's hiring 55yo web developers. At least in management it's kind of assumed you're a little older than the worker bees.

like

I think it’s not only age, but it is the fact that at a certain age older people are expected to have more experience and thus require a higher salary. These people want to hire moderate experience so they can keep you at the lower end or middle of a salary range.

like

I’m in my late 40s and definitely seeing younger people with less experience getting the job over me. At the same time I’m also seeing more senior level candidates win (maybe not necessarily younger though). But typically if I’m interviewing with someone much younger than me, I don’t anticipate a call back.

I think all other comments have validity to some degree, but I truly believe it’s about too many options present to US companies which drive this insanity. Specifically:

Worker (H1B) visas - US based companies typically pay the most worldwide, and are thus highly coveted. The problem is it hurts the local population disproportionally, because H1B has very low bar of entry. If the rule would have been you have to pay H1B 3X salary than of local candidate, this would show the company’s hand. So far recruiting is getting around that by going through 3rd parties, or tailoring the job description to a point it’s longer than a restaurant menu, which miraculously (mostly India based H1Bs) are capable of filling.

Offshoring - very easy to deal with. Set a max proportion of non-executive or mangers, and tie that to to their true end point revenue source. Say 90% of all revenue is tied to US in one way or another (even through resellers) - buddy, you better employ 90% of all non-executive body locally as well, or you will be taxed to match the difference. Banks especially have been notorious with calling EVERY corporate role as AVP or VP to obfuscate the matter.

Managed service providers - slippery slope of hidden offshoring, which is currently run unregulated.

If you have any doubts with the above, think carefully what happened during Covid: all visas that were set to expire in 2020, then 2021, then 2022 were not getting extended and folks were being forced to go back to their home countries. You still think it was a coincidence why job market shifted insanely towards employees for that brief period? Or when borders got reopened in 2023, why that demand not just collapsed, but broke through the floor, especially hurting those who just graduated and those who are 50+ the most?

I've been told "well you're kind of old" and "I was expecting someone in their 30's".

like

Now imagine if a hiring manager said to you "Well, you're kind of chubby" or "I was expecting someone less ethnic". EOC would be all over such statements. Ageism is the last frontier of acceptable discrimination.

like

My company is definitely ageist but leadership will never admit it. They’re no longer coach able and they take longer to learn technology (esp with AI adoption nowadays)

I think it is going on all the time. I’ve applied to dozens of telecom companies for jobs I can do in my sleep but they have decided to go in another direction.

1. I think you’re overthinking it all. US employment conditions are in deep trouble. Not enough holidays, paternity leave , hours and the rest. It is where it is and explaining it further doesn’t solve it. 2. You’ve listed a number of factors which are an opinion and not factual. 3. The issues are almost entirely US issues as the rest of the world, Europe essentially has far far greater transparency, conditions and humanity. Move country or revolt against your authorities. Life will get better.

The 1917 revolts in Russia have not yielded anything but misery, both internally and externally. It’s unlikely US would have revolted 250 years ago if they were given representation. No one cared about some distant king, as long as grievances could be addressed.

Think the Arab spring ( regardless of what you may think it achieved ) for those in those countries it changed a lot). Remember the USA people’s response, especially students , to Vietnam and how their revolt changed politics. The French Revolution , the Irish war of independence. The list goes on. Revolution , in the right vein, is how significant political changes occur

Arab spring - millions dead or displaced. I’d love to hear actual achievements stemming from any of this.

Vietnam - there was no revolt in USA. There were protests, pretty darn peaceful by any standards. If you call that revolt, I’m baffled.

French Revolution - nearly half a million dead, vast majority commoners. Nothing good came out of revolution itself, as bureaucracy, civil service, and administrative systems were already in place due to monarchy. Unlike Russia, which was a quasi-state for decade after revolution.

Irish war of independence - didn’t exactly achieve much, besides a follow up civil war, which was surprisingly bloodier.

This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.
