Not here to trigger any one but can someone elaborate on the toxicity they encountered in law firms? I'm experiencing something at the moment and I'm trying to understand how much of this toxicity is attributable to a manager that used to work at a firm for a number of years.

Being over evaluated (like meetings every other month to tell me about one other thing I needed to improve) and underpaid. People lying about not having work while giving it to my white colleagues of same or lower class year, so I was constantly struggling to meet hours and not getting raises or bonus. Having my vacations questioned, while my white colleagues were taking them freely. Cliques involving partners and other (white) associates, including matching tee shirts. Being taken out of client teams, once the client starts to specifically request that I handle their work… If your gut tells you it’s a bad fit, run!

Wow, this sounds like so similar even though this experience is from a firm, and I'm in house

A partner once told me that my hair might affect what deals I was staffed on because he thinks “it looks cool, but some clients might not be ok with it”. Context I’m a black male. My hair was maybe like 2.5 inches long at the time.

Dyslexia! I have worked with Forbes top companies, for-profits, non-profits, & startups. I consider myself a solver of complex & complicated problems requiring mixed method research & novel solutions. This has led to issues in self-referencing title. I’ve been project manager, data engineer, developer, modeler, analysts, principle DB developer, etc. Most of my w2 work has been from offers of 1099 clients so I am usually asked to define my own title. I'm a younger plaintiff's side attorney (31). Does anyone else feel like white attorneys give you a particularly harder time? Like unreasonably denying clear facts, or trying to fish for a way to sanction you? Usually it's solo defense attorneys that get extreme with it, but I've seen some questionable stuff from BigLaw too. Hopefully I'm not the only one.

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.
