Sometimes we are our toughest critics— the question is whether you actually like/enjoy what you’re doing? Feedback is lacking at my firm too, which can definitely cause some insecurity at times. But I have spoken up about these issues and things have improved significantly. I’m learning that no one is going to pat you on the back or give you a compliment, so you have to have an unwavering confidence in yourself. If you like what you do and where you are will help get you to the next place in your career, then stick it out & work on building confidence in yourself.
Thank you needed this
Focusing on 2, some of the best advice I got early in my career is that there is no winning. Not that I can't have small wins and move ahead, but I also need to adjust my expectations and if those aren't met, move firms
Thank you
Who are you representing in employment law? YouTube could be a great place to find a mentor and the encouragement we all need to feel like our work is valuable.
Re #3. I’ve practiced commercial litigation for 21 years. Most law firms are built on similar economic models. Therefore, they promote rainmakers regardless of their ability to adequately supervise, teach, and mentor. My suggestion is to focus on a partner or practice group looking to invest in your professional development, rather than a specific law firm.
Cont’d — Lawyers can have vastly different experiences within the same firm because their practice groups are like islands in the firm and make or break your experience. How do you find these partners looking to help develop a junior lawyer? Minority bar associations, professional groups, etc. Be vocal. Check out Frank Ramos on LinkedIn. He’s dedicated to mentorship and offers free resources. For reference, he has about 64k followers and is a partner at Clarke Silvergate.
