Mentor
Sounds like you’d be happier in 1. If you’re happier you will progress faster.
I would go for option 2 and reasons why:
1) you are working with your mentor and have a supporter - not many people get that opportunity
2) this role at $300k can turn to $400-500k in 2-3 years or less within the current firm or another firm
3) working remote 100% will impact your career growth
4) I don’t see 100% remote work go beyond the next 12 months. Perhaps some hybrid option, but let’s see. I have heard clients and companies in NYC want people back in the office at least 3 days a week.
End of day is what you want. If you want balance and work remote you go for option 1. If you want to grow and excel in your career then option 2.
Freakin baby boomers should just retire. Remote work is the future.
Option 1
Why work doing something you hate?
210k and live cheaply somewhere else
Live anywhere, presumably a place you enjoy. Doing work you love in an industry you love. Choice is simple. A successful life is more than the $.
Do option 2 for 2 years, exit at 450k
What did you decide to do?
Amt of love this post got is disheartening
What a beautiful problem to have!
Once you pass up an offer, please let us know which employer was it so we can apply 😁
Option 1 easily
1 and move to a low cost of living area
Where is offer 1. I want to apply 🤣
Life is too short. Take whatever makes you happy. Money is a short term satisfier.
Option 2 - purely for the mentor thing.
Does your wife work?
Yes - it’s me. I am the wife
I would take the industry role and move somewhere where the cost of living is less expensive especially since you hate NY. I would hate living there as well.
Got to be #1 in my mind. $300k in nyc is probably much closer to $210k in terms of purchasing power once taxes and COL is factored in. There are so many great places to live in the US (and even other countries in a telecommute option). NYC is great for most b/c of obvious reasons but to me those things are more suffocating then they are beneficial
Based on info provided, Offer 2 seems better in the long run. Does Offer 1 have similar long-term prospects or what’s the path to get there?
Do what you love and live where you like. Money is comparable as NYC is crazy expensive and you have the flexibility to live in a tax free state.
