SD biglaw is populated by a lot of H/Y/S/Berk/UCLA/USC grads. It’s probably one of the best places to live in the country so it’s highly sought after. As someone else said, Biglaw out of USD is possible but you need to be top 5-10% of the class. You’re mostly SOL coming from Cal Western, and definitely out of Thomas Jefferson. Even with the fancy credentials, you’ll need strong SD ties. Outside of the Biglaw firms, SD has some good midlaw firms: Procopio, Higgs, Seltzer Caplan, BBK, Robbins Geller (plaintiffs’ firm), Klinedinst, Allen Matkins, etc. that pay $90-150k. They can be hard to get into straight out of school though.
I went to USD. It’s tough starting out in Big Law in San Diego, even if top 5-10% grades. However, several of my classmates started out at smaller firms in San Diego and then lateraled to Big Law in San Diego after a couple years. I’d actually say this may even be the more common path. For these reasons, it can be a little deceiving when you look at firms’ websites and see several USD grads—most of them likely didn’t start in Big Law.

Generally, the big law firms in San Diego will hire from USD but not the other San Diego law schools (Thomas Jefferson / Cal Western). And to get hired from USD you have to be top of your class. Speaking for Latham and MoFo. Will defer to others on Jones Day, Cooley, DLA, Gunderson, Perkins etc

San Diego is a small insular market so direct ties certainly help

From SD, went to UCI law over USD because of ranking, and popping into the SD market required more hustle/networking than I would’ve imagined. It’s a very insular market.
Wilson hires usd grads. Need really good grades tho
Thanks all for the advice I will pass it along
