Abrasiveness is my tool of choice in a situation like this. They can also start compensating your tutorship and you can stay super polite and fluffy while they take forever to make any progress, paying you all along.
If their progress is at all related to your performance at your job, be sure to document when you assign HW and what the results were. Also good to keep notes or brief records of who was/wasn’t engaged if it can come back to haunt you in any way
Lol it’s no worries, I hated hw too. But alright, I will chill out and try not to jump into conclusions. But definitely still addressing it in a meeting with them.
Been there before. Created a weekly meeting/curriculum for people to attend only for a handful to show up & only person that I felt like really wanting to learn.
It’s easy to take it personal but you have to try your best not to. If they really wanted to learn then they would have been using other sources before trying to put it on your plate.
My advice is to go into it with the mindset that most of the people don’t really want to learn it. It just sounds good in their head to “know python” but they’re likely not going to try their hardest.
If the goal is to get more interaction, one thing we did was talk to HR to see if there was any budget for gift cards (or some prize incentive). Something along the lines of, if this person joined the last session AND completed the HW assignment they’re in a drawing for a $10 amazon gift card. Definitely saw an increase in participation by doing that.
With that said, I don’t get your hopes up when it comes to other wanting to learn a new skill. Those who really want to will make a noticeable effort.
I’ll definitely look into the incentives, that’s a good idea!! I’m just mostly annoyed because the same people I’m training, are the sssme people that were begging to be trained and get homework. My manager isn’t forcing them and they don’t need to know it right now. I am getting paid technically, but annoyed they’re wasting my time with this.
I’ve been there too. Some were falling asleep in my classes on a Friday afternoon, after I bought them pizza to launch this “exciting” class.
My solution? I didn’t follow up or bring it up. If anyone really wanted to learn, I count on them to approach me directly. The ones who weren’t truly interested will drop off organically and I just left it alone. If my manager questions me, I’ll quote a lack of interest from the audience.
Remember: you’re not paid to teach your peers or those who do not report to you. They are also not paid to learn from you.
The only ones that benefit here is the company, and the company is keeping your wages at the same level even after you broke your back to create the materials and destroyed relationships with peers. It’s not worth it.
I've had this happen when offering training.
BTW are you hiring?
Hi, Senior Data Analyst 1: is this a response to OP or to me?
