One nice thing about this in 2021 is - if your office has a policy where you have to come in a few days a week, nobody will actually know if you’re there or not, because it’s not like your boss sees your empty desk sitting there everyday.
@ACD1 my excuse is always “I’m on a call with IT!” because we outsource our IT to third-world countries to cut costs and further ruin our economy and job market, resulting in shittier IT service with even simple issues taking hour-long calls to solve
You’ll enjoy the productive collaboration with your coworkers as you creatively solve problems in real-time, all while everyone is wearing headphones that look like your working the tarmac at Newark.
Going back to the office is filling me with certain dread.
Yes. Even pre-covid the majority of people worked from home so we always had our own spot. Most people will end up having spots they like the most and it becomes routine. It's honestly not bad at all.
Seems like having lots of different people touch the same surfaces is a good idea. I mean what could go wrong ?
Have you never worked late to see how the cleaning crews clean? They just take the same dirty towel and drag it across one keyboard/desk to the next. Even after the COVID wake up call, I still wouldn't trust them to not get bored with their job and start cutting corners.
It’s pretty common in workplaces that offer flexibility to wfh and in consulting firms where people are traveling more than they’re in the office. No sense in paying for real estate to make room for all of those desks that won’t be occupied daily.
Again though, how would this work for designers and art directors?
We did this at Initiative back in 2015. It’s not bad as you feel it will be (and we were assigned lockers). People will stake their claim over the first few weeks and then everything will go back to normal. Assuming it was designed well, this meant more common areas which was great for weekly team meetings, brainstorms, etc.
