Partners/shareholders - how many hours are you expected to bill on work vs client dev and firm/associate management? My firm keeps saying that "there's no such thing as a relationship partner" and everyone top-to-bottom is expected to log 2000 hours/year on real billable work. Marketing etc is done on top of that. Is that normal?! If so, I'm going to have to totally rethink my life goals.

My firm has an 1800 billables requirement for NESHs and a 1600 billable requirement for equities. People go over that, people go under. People with 5-10 million dollar books typically bill far less than a thousand hours. But some do it all.

like

Pro bono and DEI hours count, not sure if I remember how much. Nothing else though.

Equity shareholder, no formal billable but I’m still billing over 2000/year

The amount of institutional failures at my firm is causing me to have a mental breakdown. I find myself screaming at no one in my apartment, alone, at least 12x per day. Normally I could blame increase in workload on clients or random uncontrollable world events. But it’s right now it’s just us, we just suck so bad. I want to quit so bad and just sit in silence for hours.

ARVL looks very attractive. It’s just $1 a share and it still has its investments from big auto manufacturers. It is very focused on quality and has responded to market events with care. The company will begin its production of low cost EU certified electric buses in Q4. Electric is the future and now is the time to invest! While big auto manufacturers have quickly begun production, their cost has continued to increase, while ARVL offers a competitive product that will evolve in 5-6 yrs.

It’s interesting to see conversations around age gap on this thread. I am 44F and get approached by younger guys who want to date older women. Most recently by 28M and he seems mature and level headed. Knows where he is and where he is going, doesn’t want kids, etc. Although our goals align, I am not able to come to terms with the age gap but he thinks we should give it a try. I would like to hear this group’s opinions on this. TIA

Sharks and other fishes,
I need some career advice,
In my current company I think the development portion I've been given is kinda simple, I've asked my manager and seniors to level up my work and stuff, *which they did* but I kinda caught up.. now what should I do, should I ask them to level up again or look for better opportunities
Also, I had some Interest in CyberSecurity and I grinded it on my pre-final semester at Uni, should I try on that path as well or should I stick to development?

I see a lot of people post about HSAs. I have no medical expenses and don’t plan to have children anytime soon. Is there a non-medical reason to max out HSAs? Is everyone just playing it really safe?

Federal Register confirms 2023’s 8.7% COL increase. Associate at Ogletree and my expected 2023 base salary will NOT reflect a full 8.7% increase from my 2022 salary. So I’ll effectively accept a pay cut IF I stay with OD in 2023. Also seems to mean my added yr of seniority/experience is effectively not accounted for in 2023’s salary. Is this a universal experience across comparable firms or are other firms doing across-the-board increases in light of 2023’s 8.7% COL jump? Am I overthinking this?

Hi! First off, I know none of this constitutes legal advice, etc., but I’d like some outside perspectives and advice here.

My wife found out she makes ~25% less that her male co-worker did when he was her level of seniority, and they have the same job responsibilities and the exact same credentials (same undergrad, masters program, etc.); he now makes 50% more than she does, but has 3 more years of WE, so to me that’s not as applicable.

Does she have a claim here? Need any other details?
