Make sure she’s not hotter than your wife
and make sure the nanny is 300 pounds and not hot :) seriously do not hire a hot nanny
Oh man..I think I will stick to daycare and preschool
Make sure that your bro-lo el cunado doesn't bang her
Check out care.com which has a summary of the types of things to discuss when hiring a nanny for the first time
We've done both nanny and daycare, you need a back up plan for both :) if nanny gets sick, you need someone to replace them; if your child gets sick at daycare (which they do, often...) you'll need backup since the child may not be able to go back for at least 24hrs.
Taxes, backup, and general employment risks such as documentation of expectations and duties. My only exposure is through a friend and it was the horror story trifecta. If you go under the table, you will always bear the risk that they could go nuclear and report you. Plan B because they will (and should) take time off. And expectations setting because some will completely ignore your instructions and raise the kid their way. This means naps when you don’t want them and vice versa, feeding them at the wrong times, discipline issues, etc. basically get a nest cam in every room. Then when you remind them to actually do what you ask they quit and lie to the local nanny community about what a horrible boss you were so no one else will work for you Good luck and welcome to parenting!

D1 - preach
Agree with IBM1 I banged mine twice
Over or under the table? Corresponding tax implications, Fsa for over table payment (5k/year), Au pairs require cars and likely no more than 40 hour weeks, they also live with you
Backup plan. Does nanny have other nanny buddies that step in when nanny gets sick? Are you comfortable with these people? Otherwise what’s plan b when nanny gets flu or flat tire? What’s nanny’s experience with/approach to sleeping/eating/language/etc.? What’s nanny’s mid/long term plans/timeline (e.g. starting own family, going back to school)
Any reasonably likely implications of doing under table payment?
Pay the taxes. Not worth going under the table and they also are people! We use www.4nannytaxes.com for our taxes. Don’t be overly suspicious of your nanny. If you have to put a camera in every room then you’re not comfortable with that person so don’t hire them. Our nanny has been with us for nine years and is a part of the family. Never took a sick day
Put camera in the house and do surveillance.
Thanks gentlemen.
I think I will stick to day care..I can't do MY taxes easily without messing up something or the other..no way I want to add another entity to that department.
Well it isn’t so much that you have to do any taxes you just have to pay them for them. In other words the nanny will give you two prices - one if you pay them under the table, and a higher price if you do it above board. You just have to decide if you want to pay the taxes or not
I definitely do not want to do anything under the table.
How do you vet your potential nannies?
What background checks? How?
