This ‘Go’ crap...
Cliché, derivative, unoriginal come to mind
We use both TD and Fidelity. If you are not a fidelity advisor their customer service is terrible. Their interface is clunky compared to TD. TD is not perfect, but far better in day to day use. I avoid fidelity as much as I can at this point.
If you will be under 100MM, there is no one close to TD. If above, also look at Schwab.
If you go TD, look at Black Diamond instead of Orion and advyzon. TD subsidizes the first year with black diamond. Again, if with TD, look at Morningstar advisor workstation instead of emoney/moneyguide pro, right capital. The reason for that is you will also want a “research” platform, which none of those financial planning tools has. MS has research and FP software built in that is seems less through VeoOne (TDs advisor portal).
Just some thoughts!
We will continue with advisor workstation. We'll be over $100M.
Well, take heart. The tough decision has been made. Going RIA. Look at any custodian as a “supplier” of services to you. You don’t have to pick just one, you could use both! Because they work for you, not the other way around as it was in the BD world. They don’t send you a 1099 or W2.
You are on the path to true independence. Just an FYI, I assume you will register with the SEC not state. If so, you WILL, not might, get an audit in the first 12 months. It will feel different than FINRA, but don’t get frazzled. They are truly just trying to help.
What about Schwab? Should we consider them for custodian?
Do you have the “highest” level? That has financial planning. Also TD gives you a discount. I think it’s 180 a month for the full version. Don’t know about fidelity and Schwab but since you are that size, I’d definitely check them out.
So advisor workstation has a planning tool? The next version higher?
We haven't looked at Schwab...
Yes, and I didn’t know until this week. We have been using it for years and just found out. It is almost identical to emoney and moneyguide pro (which we use now). It isn’t as pretty as the others but we also use workstation to give clients research reports so they are used to the format.
MP 1...are you using TD?
We started below 100MM and they didn’t really even want us. We are over it now but our clients are used to TD so we aren’t switching. I have a buddy that is with an RIA over 175MM and he swears by Schwab. Says they bend over backwards for them. Just an idea, because I have no experience with them (other than being a trader for them years ago).
If you are interested in TD (again, I don’t know if it would be a good fit at your size), I can get you in touch with the RIA guy. I like TD because we have a single sign in that connects redtail, irebal, Black Diamond, Morningstar, moneyguide pro, DocuSign, and laser app. All things we use and don’t need 10 windows open.
TD was just in our office. We like them for everything you mentioned, but like the ntf list at Fidelity. Torn between the two of them.
I think you should look at them. I don’t have any knowledge (personally) of people using Fidelity, but do Schwab and they like it. I used to be a trader for Schwab back in 07-09 and they were cutting edge then with tech. Don’t know now.
