Question: do D.C. big law firms require a new associate to be barred in D.C. (or the surrounding states) to work there? I am barred in CA and trying to figure out if I need to take another bar exam. I have another clerkship after this ends in August, but I wanted to get ahead of this before I start applying to firms in several months.

Did you score higher than 133 on the UBE? If so, you can waive into D.C. The process can take 12 months or more.

like

Yes, DC firms generally require associates to be barred in DC

like

Also heads up that it takes a while with non-UBE. Took me 9 months to waive in.

like

The DC bar exam is just the UBE with no other components

I just passed the October exam which was messed up with all the COVID stuff going on. So, D.C. is not allowing CA passers to waive in.

Well that sucks.

like

You’re going to have to take the DC bar.

Ethically you’re going to need to be barred in the jurisdiction where you’re regularly providing legal services.

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

Any Atomic Habit readers here? I’m brainstorming identity-based habits for two things I want to change:

-I want to bill more hours, so my goal is to become the type of person who bills at least 8 a day
-I want to drink less alcohol, so my goal is to become the type of person who drinks occasionally

Neither of these feel that helpful. Any one have suggestions for other identity-based goals that get at these changes I want to make?
