As a lawyer and CPA, I'll tell you that law students envy your job in public accounting.
DO IT ! I'd be so jealous of you.
Do you want to be a lawyer? If not, then don't waste your time or money. If it's about big $$ then don't assume you will be in big law because now only like 5% are (I graduated in 2013). Understand that lawyers are a dime a dozen and it's competitive. Seriously. And even people who were #1 in his and college class get beat. Someone's gotta be in the bottom 90%.
That said if you can articulate a plan of what you want you want to do or what your interest is, that may work out for you. But expect 60 hour weeks for 3 years, and for the love of pete, please go full time. Much better experience and prospects.
Oh good point pwc2. My comments were assuming you have a JD and have passed the bar in the state you are looking to practice in. If you're saying leave pa to go to law school that would change my thought process.
why is that?
Depends, big law makes a ton of money, but work insane hrs.
I disagree with pwc1. I think it really depends on what you want to do with your career. I am about to make that switch. I just quit last week and I am headed to a law firm. I made the decision that B4 can't give me what I want in a career. For what it's worth I have heard it is much harder to go from B4 to law firm than it is to do the reverse.
OP, maybe I'm confused. Do you already have a law degree?
If you are already a lawyer and want to go to a firm I would definitely do it. I thought you were taking about law school in general. My perception on the difference between b4 tax and law firm is that there won't be compliance in law firm. I am in consulting specialty so we only do small amounts of compliance anyway. So not sure that makes a big difference. Maybe the pay of big law; otherwise pay might be less at midsize or small firm.
don't got a JD - the plan is to quit and go to law school. opp costs is obviously something i think about, but i just don't want to live with regrets, as i don't see myself being in pa or any other relevant fields (financial reporting, internal audit, tax, consulting, etc etc)
