Take a beat to just breathe and relax. This time is a gift. And then consider LinkedIn your new best friend - for searching for jobs but also finding/reconnecting with people who will be leads for open roles. Good luck!
Senior associate here! (Ignore my fishbowl title lol) Make sure you submit for unemployment immediately!! Honestly I wish I would’ve taken a littleeee bit more time for myself but there’s always that fear of market being terrible & not finding something.
Treat applying to jobs as you would a regular 9-5pm. Tweaking resumes, cover letters, prepping for interviews, reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn, apply apply apply. My husband & I lost our jobs at the same time so I accepted the first job I got (luckily it worked out)
I just had this exact same conundrum. Tried applying before I left but every interview wanted almost instant start which I couldn't compromise on.
What I found useful was building a network before you go. Speak to a few recruiters like SM says beforehand, and ask them to keep you posted throughout. Reach out to teams/ companies that you find interesting that might not have roles yet.
When I came back, I had a couple 50% opportunities that I can now pursue without starting from scratch.
I didn't really bother applying out there. I found I was never in the right mindset to do interviews or focus on applications, so I just enjoyed the experience, but kept the networking up a little
Great advice! This approach is different from the approach I've been using, and it seems quite effective. Do you mind if I ask a few quick questions?
When you reached out to recruiters, how did you connect with them (email or LinkedIn)?
Did you ask for a quick chat or just exchanged a few emails back and forth?
At the end of the conversation, did you explicitly ask them to keep you in mind for any openings, and they'd follow up with you later?
Fastest way are referrals directly to the recruiter. I got laid off and got hired 4 weeks later.
Reach out to a few recruiters while you surf open roles, there will be time between outreach and response so it would be wise to start the process, even a little at a time. I usually set a daily goal of applying to 3 or 4 roles per day when between jobs.
I found the book Never Search Alone very helpful. I agree with all the advice here - go through referrals, build a network, focus on it like it’s a full time job. I also found cold outreach notes on LinkedIn helpful (I bought premium and reached out to people at companies I wanted to work at and had a common former employer or school)
Get in the game. Learn to sell.
