Recruiter I am working with suggested applying to DPW, PW, Latham, and Kirkland. I am looking for a busier M&A shop, but I feel like all four of these places are not going to be sustainable. Are the hours at these firms truly as terrible as people on here make them seem?

At K&E and definitely busy, but IMO very much better than the alternative after coming from a free market firm where I needed to scrounge for work. Based on data that’s been communicated to me, it’s pretty typical to hit around 2100 in M&A as a junior/midlevel.

like

There are generally 3 levels of hours in big law in the V30. <1900= job security tenuous
1900 - 2300=- busy, but not cancel weekend plants and vacations busy
>2300 = no predictability. You are a slave to the deal.

Gotta decide what’s most important to you. Can’t have it all.

like

They all have potential to be. If you’re at one of the firms and considered a reliable, go-to associate partners want on their teams, you’re there. Different partners and senior associates may or may not be easier to work for when it comes to not *how many* hours you’re billing but *when* you’re billing them (big difference). But you wont know how that shakes out till you get there.

like

Expect 2200-2500 for promotion to at least counsel. Otherwise expect to be counseled out at the end of your associate ramp.

like

Also at KE, if you aren’t bad, you will make NSP with 1900-2100 hours. It’s free market, so you can definitely choose who you want to work with and the hours you want to bill annually, especially because M&A is huge here

What’s the best way to compare lots of data with time stamps? I.e. you’re trying to evaluate the time different steps in a process take for multiple line items (10000 rows)

Current approach I’m doing is to subtract the times (in hh.mm.ss) from each other to get the duration of each step. Not sure if there’s an excel time stamp function that would make this easier. It’s not working well for times that were late PM and bleed into early next day AM.

Cold applied for an awesome role, had an interview with hiring manager, recruiter, and given a pretty hefty assignment that I’m really proud of nailing. They followed up with an email asking for 4-5 days that I am available for a full day of interviews. Gave them 4-5 days, started planning for how I’d get those days off work during insane times at current job, and now not a single word from them to confirm a date. Been over a week now. Sad. Pretty jaded. What can I do? Already followed up

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
