Never rude with a recruiter- part of their job is to know what you're looking for salary wise.
Always ask with a recruiter. Shocked they didn't mention first. It's usually one of the first things discussed to make sure conversations worth having.
Last time I worked with a recruiter they ended up asking me for a number by our second phone call. I highballed it to almost double what I was making at my previous agency. He said it might be a tall order, but would try to see what he could do... and, here I am! Know your worth.
Yeah I always jump on that first conversation.
1. Never say a number or range first 2. Don't write it off if it is lower than what you are looking for, I got an offer from that was about 20k more than the first conversation with the recruiter, there is always room for negotiation! Especially if they really like you
They can ask and may be required to ask, but you do not have to give them the answer.
*production, not creative
They will ask you first, in fact, during the interview...
I have the opposite problem. Recruiters ALWAYS want a number before we seriously discuss the role. I say "there's no way I can know that without meeting the team/president/boss etc" and 50% of the time that's a deal breaker. Their loss.
