Second year considering leaving NY biglaw for a few public interest options. Partly for mental health reasons. Making market, and I would potentially leave for a starting position offering around / a bit over $80k. Holding out currently to see what else arises. Fortunately I don’t have much debt, and that’s enough to cover my basic rent/living expenses, but not by much. Has anyone made a jump like that before? How did you manage financially if so? Living in this city ain’t cheap🙃

I did, but I'll admit that I had the privilege of a dual income household. But I also had six figures of student loan debt.

I wasn't making market, but I went from 145k to 75k after my first year of practice. It was 100% worth it. I learned so much more about the law AND myself in my public interest role. I wasn't depressed at the thought of going to work everyday.

I'd also only been out of law school a year, so it wasn't that hard to change my standard of living, especially since I was doing less depressed shopping to fill the void.

If you ultimately want to go into PI anyway and you're miserable, my advice would be to rip off the band aid if you can make it work. Otherwise, lifestyle creep will make it harder as the years go by.

There’s a debit card that I’ve been using for the past 4 years and it beats out some of the cash back credit cards. It’s the Cash app debit card. I haven’t heard people talk about it in the card community and it could save people a bit of money - 10% cash back. My challenge to everyone of you. Every leader, every future leader, everybody who will lead this industry one day: when we get back to normal, whatever that will look like, get personally involved again with recruiting, hiring and mentoring. DO NOT leave personnel decisions to HR, alone. DO Not rely on the parasitic temp agencies like creative circle and Aquent to do all the work. Get involved. Give a damn. A creative leader saw value in me, l assume someone saw value in you too. Pay it forward.

Thanks in advance!

Additional Posts in Law Exit Opportunities

I have been a practicing (patent prosecution) lawyer in different firms for about 20 years. I would love to do something more creative but still techie (computers, telecom, apps, etc.). I've always been interested in improving the software that practicing lawyers use (whether patent-specific or not). I am also kind of an academic at heart, but I live in a locale where professorial jobs are pretty limited and we're rooted here now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’m a fifth year associate who is ready to get out of litigation (and private practice altogether). I’ve only ever done professional malpractice (legal, med mal, etc) and feel like those skills will not transfer as well if I had done transactional work.
