Culture is toxic, particularly within Consulting (Advisory is less toxic but has lower pay to match). Lot of people are cutthroat and have no qualms with throwing lower levels under the bus. WLB is a farce and promotion expectations tilt heavily in the firm’s favor.
That said, it’s not necessarily a terrible idea. Opportunities for growth and interesting work are plentiful. Not every team is toxic, just have to find the good ones.
Your experience at any of the Big 4 is entirely service line dependant, so you'll need to ask more targeted questions to find out more.
Deloitte has a very strong brand, and recognition that supersedes MBB with peers outside of consulting.
That said, there do appear to be a disproportionate amount of arrogant posts from Big D fish on this app, though this could be a coincidence or the same set of vocal folks. It could also be self selecting, since Deloitte is often said to be the best of the Big 4, thereby being sought out by the most type-A or prestige driven folks in the Big 4 candidate pool.
It’s honestly a disgusting display of people who flaunt being “professionals” but will also berate people anonymously to stroke their fragile ego.
I worked in LS at Deloitte in strat (also another consulting firm) - at Deloitte, had 1 good team, 1 bad team, 1 absolutely terrible team. There seems to be no accountability for treating people like garbage so if you happen to find a good team, it’s just like any other consulting firm; if your team happens to be toxic / abusive, tough luck.
Best way to characterize the Deloitte system is to imagine a firm that maximized value to the partners at any cost with an unlimited supply of talent that is self conscious about not getting into MBB - you would get Deloitte. Eg terrible raises, 9 month lag time from getting promoted to actually getting paid, cut throat managers (I haven’t seen anything like it outside of Deloitte), people being strung along for 10 years and not making partner, etc.
Final thought - Deloitte sells SOO much work and like 10% of it are the “cool” projects younger staff actually wants to do. The bad news for individual contributors is that most people won’t be staffed on those projects.. and the people that do are entirely expendable
But Deloitte Nice!!!
D1 nailed it. I’ll add really bad virtual onboarding experience. It’s prob better to join when in person — firm always talks about importance of networking which is really hard to do virtually. It is also common to be told you’ll be doing x type of work to join then get stuck doing y type of work

Yeah our virtual onboarding has been abysmal
When I started I thought Deloitte was the worst decision I ever made and was desperate to find an exit.
It took 2 years but eventually I found a niche I enjoy and a team I can follow through projects that helps me grow and has encouraged me to expand my horizons. Obviously your mileage may vary but the clients here are generally bigger and more prestigious and the people are generally smarter and more capable. I’ve hit a soft spot where I have growth opportunities without truly awful WLB. You have to fight tooth and nail to be given opportunities but when you do you can go a long ways at Deloitte.

I like it a lot, and have enjoyed working here for many years. We've grown really fast in the past year or so, which is making culture a challenge. The work is also challenging, and I think people have unrealistic expectations at times for what they want to do vs what they are actually being asked to do. Getting acclimated can take time and i think a lot of the negativity you read is from people who are still newer and going through that churn.

Huh? "Bounded"? What a weird message D3. OP asked people to share their experiences. Mine has been positive and good.
For my projects, people work pretty normal hours. The workload is heavy but people on my projects largely get their client done in 40-45 hours a week. Hours and responsibility vary by level. Some projects can be tough and long hours.
I'm a new experienced hire. I hated coming in and it was painful primarily in part to virtual and pandemic. It's just hard right now.
I love it. I like my people, teams, and opportunities. It hasn't been easy but I can confidently say it's been worth it. I'm going to keep after it.
There's crap at every single company regardless of the size.
What is it you want to accomplish? What company can get you there then you have to weigh the validity of perception of said company.
Yes, it is. The right attitude can do anything not to sound cliche. I truly am glad I am here :) Good luck to you.
Wow I really waged a war here didn’t I
Thank you! I appreciate your response!
I saw two analysts getting absolutely destroyed onsite by their manager and sr.consultant.
Even the client was "WTF dude chill ffs!"
The KPMG team in the corner of the room almost started crying seeing the scene.
I would pay to see that 😂
This is a loaded question and will most likely just confirm your pre-existing bias, so there’s that. You should rephrase and you would get more accurate results
1. Bias for sure
2. “The firm is garbage,” not what OP said, you said that
3. You control the conversation as much as OP and instead elected to be the exact problem you were expected to be. You played yourself, congrats.

D5 what? Stop being mean.
Any idea when D is going back to work on site? Hate the thought of transitioning into a new company (any company) virtually.
