Places with this set up are toxic. Make them give you facetime in these meetings or quit.
I just kind of feel like I’m undervalued. I have so much to offer and I really enjoy learning new things. Sometimes I don’t need to come and talk in these meetings but it would be nice to sit, observe, and just learn, and enhance my connections with my customers. But my boss feels I’m better off sitting at a desk, pushing paper, and processing orders cuz it’s more $$. I just feel like I’m so much better than this and I know my potential but unfortunately, management doesn’t. May it’s #timetogo
Yea actually at my last review that was exactly what I said. “I would love to be able to at least attend and observe these meetings.” By it was shot down. I was told I shouldn’t take it personally and I wasn’t even taking it personally..I just wanted to be included in order to learn more. Anyway, flash forward…I’m about to accept another offer and put in my notice. 💃
As someone in these client meetings, I try to make sure my team members are updated as to what happens in these meetings. While what others have said may be true I like to give my reports opportunities to be informed before having a seat at that table. With some clients concerned with the number of people in meetings sometimes I can’t include everyone. At the same time, there are some things my team members may not think about.
I can understand the desire to be involved in everything/FOMO, so it is important to work with your manager to be informed and equally important for your manager to inform you as appropriate.
It isn’t as easy as that. The OP wanted to know if what was going on was normal and sometimes it happens and it could be out of her managers control.
Sometimes clients don’t want their team of 5-10 people on every call—especially when you have billable hours. They may want to talk to one or two people who can then communicate across the team.
This isn’t micromanaging. It is called effective communication and delegation.
This person may learn that things happen for a reason and to take a look at the bigger picture of the situation.
I am in the same position. I manage the account operationally and can bring a great deal of value to the discussion. However, I am never included in these discussions, and many takeaway questions are routed to me after. These meetings are to show our clients that our senior and executive leadership are invested in them, but they are too far removed from the day to day strategic needs of our clients. Seems a little performative to me; however, our clients like the face to face interaction with our senior and executive leaders and does deepen our trust with the client so I try to look at it from a different perspective. I know I am important and add value, so I try not to take it personally.
This happens to me very frequently. It leads to the client contacting my superiors instead of me for deliverables and makes everything take longer 😭
