There’s different budgets for this stuff. Someone from billing redirected it to where it’s more likely to be reimbursed. End of story.
Firm allots $X for social outings/meals for business development and $Y for the same under DEI initiatives. $X is a little low and firm’s been pushing back on expenses whereas fewer people draw on $Y so easier to get it reimbursed. This is totally normal corporate stuff?
Ugh. I'm Asian too and this happened with a lunch meeting with a mentee who happened to be POC. My mentee was originally paired through a non-diversity channel. You have a right to feel weird about it.

Yaalllllllll, I have an update 🤦🏻♀️ Our DEI manager just rejected this expense because she says it is not DEI lol. She is now taking this to marketing/bus dev for approval.
Turns out, someone had also switched 2 law student coffees from recruiting to DEI bc the students had obviously ethnic names. 😑 DEI manager is now trying to get those moved over accordingly.

Ohhhh that's how they knew her ethnicity. It sounds like they're trying to fulfill some kind of quota on money spent on diversity and using this as an opportunity
Everyone’s tightening budgets atm, I would bet it’s because they have more available in the DEI budget so are trying to redirect if possible. But agreed it’s weird/awk.
Well 1. Does talking to a lawyer at another firm even count as biz dev? The only thing I’d be concerned about is whether it somehow impacts the report of it being bizdev vs DEI and u need to do a certain amount of biz dev.
Either way they pay for it?

I guess as long as they pay for it that's all that matters but I don't think you're overreacting because this if you or your friend were white I don't think this would have been the case
