I would not tell the new company WHY you’re delaying. It might appear to be a red flag for them - burning another company just for money. I get why you’re waiting, but it’s not great optics for a brand new hire. When the “What date can you start?” Question comes up, say “if possible, there’s some projects here that I feel strongly about being able to wrap up. If it’s possible, I’d love to be able to start with you 4/16”. If that’s a deal breaker for them, just be prepared to decide what’s more important: the bonus or the new job
Hopefully the actual offer will stretch out a little more. If you can get it down to 4 weeks instead of 6 I would just tell them you're in the middle of a project you're really invested in and would like to see through. Or maybe tell them that even if it's 6 weeks...I have found that unless there REALLY is a critical need places are willing to wait a few extra weeks if necessary.
You could also say you had travel plans already booked and don’t want to start until after. They would be happy to think you won’t be taking a long vacation on their dime.
I think you should say that you have projects you’re working on and you owe it to your team to see them through. You’re loyal and they are counting on you.
I wouldn't lie, a lot of agencies have bonus payouts at the end of the financial year so you won't be the first or the last their recruiters have come across in the same situation. When discussing the offer, just let them know your earliest available start date. If they really press you on it, excuses will sound flimsy. It's understandable that something you've been working hard all year to achieve is important to you. Also you're not burning your previous agency just for money by completing the financial year and sharing in the results you've contributed to. Why are we here pretending not to take holiday or be financially motivated? I hope you enjoy spending your hard earned bonus and good luck with the potential new job, hopefully it's not even an issue!
Where do you work so I can get a bonus and your job lol
If I get offered this new job, do I tell them the truth about why I can't start for another 6 weeks? Or say something vague about it? I'm not willing to give up the bonus, it's a lot of $. I don't want to sound douchey, but I've made it a year in purgatory just for this money basically.
