So who else here is experiencing plummeting billable hours and exponential weight gain since this whole WFH thing started? Bought snacks for 30 days, finished in 48 hours.

I ate four donuts today. Then, a bunch of folks had a virtual happy hour (by emailing photos of what we were drinking) for a colleague who is “leaving” for another firm. Of course one person posted their green smoothie and I thought of all the lies I told myself about how healthy I was going to eat now that I had time to prep. I immediately made myself a green smoothie and chugged it.

Me too! 0 work coming from the firm office in the city I actually work in. It’s weird. I worry that when that work dries up I’ll be out.

I think billing is going to depend on the types of tasks you can accomplish over long periods of time. I plan to draft a series of Case Evaluations at my leisure. May have to cut my time but given the typical length of these reports, that’s an easy 5-6 hours for me. Without this block billing I would be lost as courts are closed in my jurisdiction and filings are not being accepted.

My daughter and I started doing home workouts from you tube for five to ten minutes at a time. It definitely has helped since I'm not used to being glued to my computer all day. Where's that am hearing when you need it?

I’m a solo land use attorney. My local government and all non life sustaining businesses (including real estate and construction) are shut down. I literally have nothing to do. I’ll be slowly going broke until this is over... and probably for awhile after until the real estate market recovers.

Edit: I’ve managed to lose 8lbs this week since I’ve cooked 100% and cut way back on drinking and snacking.

One of the cities I do work in is holding its plat committee by Microsoft groups in April. Maybe try petitioning your local government to allow certain applications to move forward via virtual platforms to afford the property owners an opportunity to be heard? Also I've been busy advocating on behalf of certain clients to permit them to remain open under the state of emergency. Maybe look into work like that for now? I'm also a land use attorney and my well hasn't dried up yet but I know it's coming soon. I'm trying to do every last bit of work until then. Although I've been cooking all my meals, I've supplemented them with lots of snacks and I'm gaining weight.

like

Not me. When I’m concentrating on work, I usually forget to eat. Just need coffee and maybe a protein bar for sufficient calories to get through the day. Don’t snack or graze while working on tasks that require focus- if your digestive system is drawing a lot of blood flow from activity, there’s less for your brain.

I’m on a diet so yeah it’s depressing.

ME.

I am losing so much weight. I just do not have an appetite anymore. Because I’m like “Am I gonna get it? Am I gonna die in a few days?” Ugh. I eat solely foods to support my immune system. Much to distressed to seek it for enjoyment.

Re impact on my hours, I’m pulling away from my desk early eve to bury my attention in a movie. I guess I get lost in news stories and research of folk remedies too, so burn through a couple of hours that would otherwise be productive.

Anyone looking at traveling to Costa Rica? They have a list of states from which they will admit tourists while also requiring a negative covid test, health history, etc. As someone not on the approved list, I am bitter and curious why the population is grouped at a state level when there are massively different rates of infection within each state (not to mention personal responsibility) and you are already required to present a negative test. Any idea how often those lists get updated?

Explain to me like I’m 5. Why does the monthly billable hours goal on things like Intellistat change month to month. I’m not hitting hours this year. Last month goal was 158. This months goal is 180.

What kind of companies pay more than $200k base and what practice areas? Remote or Texas. I’m a new attorney between M&A and L&E, but I’m willing to switch practice areas for the best exit options in the future (4-5 yoe).

We need to STOP glamorizing overworking. Please.

The absence of sleep, good diet, exercise, relaxation, and time with friends and family isn’t something to be applauded.

To many people wear their burnout as a badge of honor. It’s time to consider pivoting.

And it needs to change.

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

I think we are beginning to move past this, but now he’s starting to mention things like ‘I am really broke this month’, and last weekend he told me his mum has lost her job and he’ll have to probably pay her rent.
