I have Grand i10 nios. The AMT gearbox, handling, interiors are good and it is spacious. AMT is also less jerky, but the suspension is stiff and terrible especially for back passengers. Too much bouncy. Also the mileage is pathetic getting 9-11 in bangalore city traffic. You could try out Ignis, test drive it once, heard it's a comfortable car with decent mileage.
For Tata, it's better to avoid, getting a quality car from them is a matter of luck n if you get a lemon then goodluck running around their horrible service centers. Why waste money on sub-par quality cars.
You can think of honda amaze. A decent option in that price rant
Go for Tata punch
You haven't mentioned how you wish to use the car. Both cars have their strength and weaknesses
1. i10 -
Pros - good engine and transmission, nice fit and finish, good overall service center experience, less niggles
Cons - Suspension more suitable for city rides and smooth roads, bad safety ratings
2. Tiago
Pros - Very good safety ratings, suspension is better and can manage bad roads and highways in mature mature manner.
Cons - Engine feels less refined, although it has improved a lot on BS6 Phase 2, fit and finish aren't as great. Service Center experience is a hit and miss.
In short, if you are going to limit yourself to city, get an i10. If you are planning to drive longer distance get the Tiago. It'll be far more comfortable. Both cars in their current generation/form have been in market for long time so most of the major issues have been sorted.
Test drive both cars in multiple scenarios - traffic, highways etc. and then decide.
Also if you are going for Tiago, search around and check for good authorized service centers in the area. From what I know. Tata service experience is driven at dealer level than process driven by Tata Motors. Also do the PDI in detail.
