The scam (at least in California) is the unit requirement outside of accounting. I didn’t major in accounting but took enough classes to meet the accounting unit requirement and would’ve had to take another year of BS fluff classes online or at community college to even get my license despite having double majored in a semi-STEM and STEM field.
Agree with this
CPA exam is essentially gate keeping and is really for CPAs to impress each other.
Welcome to the world of business where barriers to entry are made up to make the "in crowd" more valuable.
Name one thing you could not learn from a great mentor
Keep assuming everyone is a man, see how far that gets you.
Disagree. The scam is 150 hours.
Agreed. Im a CPA but my masters is worthless. 30k down the drain for nothing.
And your point is...?
Ask yourself: how many exams that you took in college were really meaningful and allowed you to represent accurately what you had learned in the course?
And whether you like it or not, the CPA exam is still the measure of what it is to be a professional accountant - it's "table stakes" for being in the field.
PS - I'm guessing you didn't do so well on the CPA exam...sour grapes?
As a new audit associate, I feel like everyone loves whining about the CPA exam when other professions have even more difficult licensing requirements. No one appreciates these barriers to entry anymore haha.
Please give a reason for why you think its a scam. If you just say that no one can disagree with you makes me think you aren't cut out for the profession. Is the Barr exam also a scam? The medical licensing exam? The professional engineer exam? CPAs have fewer education requirements than all these professions and yet we have some serious income and career potential.
Don't call it a scam because its a lot of work. Other professions have it so much worse and no one is calling it a scam.
22 year old me might have agreed with you, but 32 year old me got his act together, put in the study time and passed it. Twenty years later, with over 800 hours of CPE and after managing dozens of auditors who either did or didn’t pass the exam I can say it’s a valuable certification, backed up by state licensing (as opposed to my four other certifications). CPA certification means you are willing to suck it up and put in the work. I can count on a CPA to know what it means to learn something new and consider different ways of thinking about an issue.
My certification didn’t make much difference in my salary for the first couple of years, but it opened up many opportunities after that. You can’t be a CPA, act like an idiot, and get those promotions, but if you forgo acting like an idiot there is a lot of opportunity.
So much for being a clown
Did someone fail their exam?
Pro
Can't pass, huh?
I agree
Yes yes it’s a big scam. You shouldn’t try to pass it.
Haha what makes u say that
Shots fired 😂
How is it a scam? If you are in audit, you won't advance without certification. And many private opportunities prefer CPAs in Controller/CFO roles.
LoL
Ow yes so the same applies to you asking for bigger pay when you have that CPA 😂
Skill issue 😴
how is it a scam. pwc paid for all of the exams plus materials. passed it on the first try and got $5k for passing it. i call that a win, not scam.
The exam is too easy. It's way too overrated.
Pls provide support thx
It really just takes focused effort for studying. It is just like any other test.
