The fact that job titles matter so much drives me crazy. I'm in industry and despite a senior title, I do what a manager does at many other companies, get paid like a manager at other companies, and yet in the job searching process it's clear that not having the word manager in my title is costing me opportunities.

Ask for a new title

like

If you are doing manager level work with a senior title, why not try to get promoted internally first?

like

My company has the manager title. It's just more of a director role.

It is unfortunate that job title is the only thing being looked at. I know people looking at those resumes do not spend all the time on them and not looking through the responsibilities hurts the applicant. Especially when the job title hierarchy can be so different at places.

like

Ask for title promotion, very easy to do in industry . As long you don’t already have manager above you, and if you have a legit case, then they can definitely bump your title.

I've been working on it but it's not that easy, especially when all of our department titles are kind of funky. They absolutely know i want to move up and have told me I would if they had an opening.

I’m with you on this … M3 tax manager here with 10 YOE. My comp is equivalent to exp SMs friends at b4, and more than other Ms and first / second year SMs at my company based on Fb and Reddit comp threads. I was just told my SM promotion is 2 years out from now bc of firm politics and factors outside of my/team’s control. I even have 4 partners advocating for me but everyone’s hands are tied.

The job search continues …

like

Work with a 3rd party recruiter and let them explain it to future employers.

That or push for an internal promotion.

I'm doing both but the market is tough and our business is down right now so they are feeling stingy.

There’s not always a career path in industry especially if the business isn’t growing and attrition isn’t happening. That’s often why it’s a dead end career for many. Titles are often nebulous. A manager at one company may be the equivalent of an experienced associate at another. Hiring managers look past the titles and more about the experience and skill set. Make sure you emphasize the experience and responsibilities you have. Titles are more about what the employee wants IMO because they want to throw a title out behind their name. Do a great job. Be someone they do not want to lose. They will take care of you with compensation and benefits but not everybody can be president or an owner in an industry job so you may be pushing for something that can’t happen. Unless you’re in banking where everyone can be a vice president. Titles can sound big but they’re often not. Hiring companies already know the skill set and experience they are looking for. They most often don’t search for people that have X title. They will give you the bigger title to lure you to switch jobs if you have what they need.

Do you manage people?

Why is education deemed more valuable on a pay scale than experience? Employers will pay someone with a degree and no experience a greater salary, than someone who has exhibited the experience.
