Hey buddy, I am glad you found a community. I have worked at Deloitte for 4 years. I have met some really insane ( I mean off the charts) people at Deloitte and some great ones. The truly great ones end up becoming senior managers and above but mid level managers are almost bottom of the barrel.
Some traits I have noticed and avoid like the plague
- push people for irrelavant nonsense
You hit on some good points F1
Hey OP. Sorry to hear that happened to you.
I’m in management consulting and have worked on a lot of non tech implementation projects and it is a lot less diverse and lot fewer Indians. But, I’ve also worked on the other side on tech implementations and worked with several Indians and found that it’s almost impossible to avoid Indians in any tech related project.
Which is honestly something that makes me proud to be indian. Tech is becoming more and more essential and much more integrated in Management Consulting and will only continue to do so. I’m proud that is partly due to the contributions made by other Indians. Just food for thought.
A2 don’t get me wrong, my objective wasn’t to avoid Indians, I was fed up of the Indian it culture and wanted a more western/diverse environment and for my first experience in Deloitte I’ve learnt moving into a non Indian space can be a boon/curse and at the end of the day it’s all always safe to have your own folks to back you up in situations like this, had I not built a strong rapport with the Indians in my project I could’ve lost my job based on my white managers extremely negative feedback
I totally feel you OP. I do not have disdain for my indian colleagues but wanted to get out of IT. JOINED PwC out of B school only to realize it is a white boys club where they went after the Indians for the shit work and because most of us had a background in IT, made us do only IT work. It is only when I came to Deloitte (S&O) and worked with Indians who championed my promotion and ironically put me on nonIT opportunities.
Exactly my story too, sometime I wonder how blacks/Hispanics manage in heavily white/Indian practices where they have a considerably small support group of their ethnicity
For those asking what kind of harassment I have a laundry list starting with singling me out for every mistake done by a team of 5 and I’m the most junior, critical of my english and expecting it to be GMAT level when the client understands me more than the Non Indian colleagues on my team, the list goes on
OP... Assholes are assholes.... doesn’t matter what race or religion they are.

OP, you can't be yelled at. Period. Whether about a small little PowerPoint thing or anything else for that matter. That is abuse, plain and simple. I know it's hard for you being Indian and your manager being Caucasian but next time any kind of abuse happens, straight away stop doing any work (unless it's in front of the client.. Then somehow finish it off), ask to speak to her in private and let her know that you've had it with her yelling at you and that you will be reporting the matter to HR and your practice lead.
Hi op, this in essence is consulting. The ability to negotiate and negotiate your position in your favor is what is consulting. If you don’t build skills to be able to navigate this environment, you will be trampled on in other projects too by other women trying to play Wonder Woman in the office. Pull her to the side and tell her this is an issue and unfortunately you will have to take the terrible step of reporting to HR. She will pipe down and if she doesn’t, get the hell out of that project. I am
Pretty sure that everyone knows about her already.
Btw - are we talking about a mid 30’s Chinese American ? Because I know a female like this from my time in Deloitte who was exactly this way. She tried to pull the same stunts with me, I told her to buzz off. I was a contractor and she tried to get me fired. I bad mouthed her around the office and insulted her every oppurtunity.

OP: on a different but related note, some of this could be a Deloitte issue too.
Most of the Deloitte people I’ve met have a major stick up theirs, and they thrive on dirty office politics.
Rising Star
That is very awkward and concerning OP. No one deserves to work in abusive work environment. I had similar issues too in one project where every person in the team did not like me because 1) everyone else is a management consultant but project was tech implementation 2) they did not work multiple teams with diff skills from different cultures..
I continued to work hard and stay focussed, reported to leadership.. I did not know what else I could do.. but as I started building knowledge around what I was doing, there was less passive abusing and more dependency.. may be Thats what you may need to do in long term..
So sorry you went through this:( Interestingly I had just the opposite experience! Harassed by my Indian SM to be saved by local leadership. Life happens!
You ok Op? Harassed how

Wow
I’ve had the reverse experience: on my first D project, it was my non-Indian colleagues who allowed me to stay despite the poor behavior from my Indian co-workers.
Sorry to hear D4, there are always a few bad apples who put down their own so they can climb up the ladder
Pro
Exact opposite experience, manager at D doing tech and sick and tired of desi politics, indian men refusing to report to me and throwing shade etc. Deloitte has now been reduced to a glorified infosys
It’s unfortunate that the commercial side of D seems to be full of desis who haven’t quite figured out that they don’t live in India anymore. The lack of diversity also pushed me to go back to federal.
