Exit opps are what you make of them in any role - half is your current experience, half is how well you network, your education and personal intangibles
Accounting advisory is better for a career track that is dedicated to technical accounting - controllership, CAO etc.
FDD better for career tracks in accounting and finance that blend ops / finance / and traditional accounting skillsets. The muscle memory you build is quickly digesting a set of financials / ID’ing the trends that matter and drivers (or what looks off), and being able to succinctly communicate what matters and why to investors and other stakeholders that have some but limited accounting knowledge. All skills that are valuable in any financial leadership role, whether that being FPA at a more junior level, leading a finance org if you go the private CFP track, strategic finance, investor relations or xyz accounting and finance role.
And if leaving accounting and finance is your goal, I’ve seen many more FFD people get into M7 MBAs than FAAS and there’s always the lucky few former FDDers that are able to pull off the FDD to IB to deal team PE track (but that’s pretty rare in the US).
AAS projects are extremely broad compared to FDD, but generally speaking, it's a little easier to move into IB or FP&A with FDD experience compared to AAS.
Emphasizing extremely broad
If you’re moving into TD at EY-P from ur current role, you’re going to have some more integrated strategy compared to FDD at big 4. With EY-P you get exposure and work with PE firms leading to exits in operations and maybe even deal teams if played right.
I’ve seen FDD to IB, MBA, LMM PE, CFO (was pretty senior when he left), and more FDD. I’ve been reached out for Corp Dev role here and there and a corp strategy role as well. Most recruiters come along to poach to do FDD at another firm but every now and then a decent role comes along
