I wouldn’t pay into an FSA until you have a kid since it’s use it or lose it. You should be able to start once a kid is born due to a birth being a qualified life event and allowing you to update your benefits
Thanks! I think we will still contribute some because like the first commenter pointed out we can use it for other stuff that I know will come up. Just not sure about if it’s $2700 total or per person.
Obviously if we were certain we would get pregnant and have the baby in 2019 we would max out for both of us but if we don’t we don’t need to. how would you all proceed or advise a client in this situation?
The limit for FSA’s in 2019 is $2700. It’s not double for two people. Her plan may have the rollover feature where up to $500 of unused $$ can roll over. Remember, funds can be used for medical, dental and vision expenses. If either of you wear glasses or contacts or have major dental expenses, it’s not hard to come up with $2700 of eligible expenses when you add in medical plan deductibles, office visit and Rx copays.
If husband and wife both work and their respective employers offer an FSA then you could each have an account. However, you can’t submit the same expenses to both plans.
Use an HSA. That way you don’t lose it if you don’t use it.
You can have an HSA directly with the gov’t. Doesn’t need to be offered through your employer.
Add up your receipts for what you spent on medical expenses this year and put in slightly more than that
