Same as people writing MBA
I really appreciate it when people do that, so I can easily pick out the project managers to avoid.
Worse than PhD
I have the credential, but it is only visible on my business cards, CV, and LinkedIn profile. It doesn’t bother me one way or another, but I believe it holds very little value because (1) so many have the designation which waters down its value and (2) it does not carry over well to most industries.
I’m not sure what industries do value it, to be honest
SM2 - appreciate the background on the evolution of the PMP.
It has value within a specific niche. But outside of that niche is pointless. And as you become more senior (think SM and above) it becomes irrelevant (or worse, signifies you as “junior”).
Because everyone gūd at that level has led a team. Don’t need to be certified for that
I’ve met so many people with a PMP that couldn’t manage their way out of a cardboard box.
Makes you look junior to prominently list it IMO
Absolutely never do it
Change it to PIMP in your email replies back to see if they notice
I agree, if you are a CPA, CFA, MD, JD go for it.
Not sure if I’d broadcast an MBA, the folks that do tend to go to pretty bad schools.
SM2: Good call.
And it is true that the people who put an MBA/MS after their name tend to have gone to less prestigious schools.
I'd say leave it off anything not formal
In my experience the only folks who prominently display credentials with name are in federal.
If you work in public sector I guess it’s ok, but otherwise I wouldn’t broadcast a cert like that.
I think a bachelor degree is more valuable than a PMP. It's just a 1-off easy computerized test. It definitely is overrated.
I feel like the only people who use it are those without better credentials. CPA? Go for it? PMP? Come on, dude.
Who cares?
If it adds credibility to your audience, use it. If not, don’t bother. I have a very industry-specific cred that I use when I want the person receiving my email to realize that I know what I’m talking about, but it’s meaningless to anyone else, so I drop it for non-industry recipients.
