The school is 100% what you put into it. A good book gets you a job after the program is complete, not the school. That being said, CPS could do better with helping students network.
Like any portfolio school it’s 100% what you put in. Students have gotten jobs everywhere—crispin, bbh London, etc, but you have to work really hard, because unlike other schools, it’s just a 1 year program.
Go to MIAMI D SCHOOL and you will have a better life
This feed has for sure helped me decide on an investment in MAS!
I taught there. Don’t go
I went to Chicago Portfolio School. It’s a total scam. They don’t care about students and they offer very little in the way of job placement. Spend your money on a school that counts for something. Creative Circus, Miami, VCU—don’t go to CPS.
Seconding this as well. Not worth the time or money, invest your money on actual accredited programs.
I hired my two most recent creatives from there and they have both performed & grown marvelously!
I work with people who went there and have done well for themselves, but it definitely seems like a mixed bag (it seems worth noting the school was evicted at least for a while this past year?). I hadn’t heard of it before moving to Chicago. I didn’t go to one so can’t speak to the differences but if I were you I’d invest in a top notch 2 year program.
It’s a school like any other. I know a lot of people who went, came out with decent books, and still struggle for work. In Chicago, at least. Only so many “prestige” agencies that they can aim for, and they wind up laying off whole teams on a frequent basis.
As people have said, it’s what you put into it. A great portfolio will get you a good job. Like most, it’s a portfolio school. They aren’t going to come up with ideas for you - actually sometimes they do, but mostly they will guide you toward better ideas, and a better portfolio. They know how to direct you, avoid the cliches, focus on relevance etc. The rest should be up to you. Like other creative industries. You get an acting job because you’ve shown you can act. You get directing gigs because you’ve shown you can direct. Photographers, writers, etc. etc. people don’t GET them jobs, they have to show they are the right one for the job. It’s pretty clear in the name, The Chicago Portfolio School helps you with your work and your portfolio. They are not a placement service. As it has always been, if you have a great book and you know what you’re talking about, then you will have what it takes for an agency to realize you know something and can contribute something worth paying for.
I’m late to the game on this, but one of their biggest problems is that they don’t do a good job getting teachers at the CD level and above. So you end up with art directors and writers who only have a few years of experience teaching classes, and it shows in the portfolios coming out of that school.
