Current clients? I’m unsure. Usually, I see it the other way around - client reaches out to you. But, be careful that could easily blow up. Good luck.
At DT I’ve only seen people leaving for current clients, instead of the other way around. From what I’ve seen people usually reach out to the client and tell the partners on the engagement. The partners are usually pretty open about it and help them negotiate higher pay if they’ve worked with you and know your a solid performer who they can work with as a client. And they know you’re looking to leave the firm anyways, so they’ll want to keep a good relationship if you’re going to a client instead of leaving on bad terms
If you have a good relationship with them, why not?
In fact — if you have a good partner or sr. manager leading your group, feel free to reach out to him/her. I lead our practice in my office and will gladly refer work opportunities to my team members/make introductions — without taking this into account at a performance review.
Not everyone is a saint like you
The engagement letter probably strongly discourages this but you do you boo boo
At least at the director level I think my team seeks to strategically place people who want to leave at target clients.
Depending on the work RSM has done the client might have to get approval from RSM to offer you anything or to interview you.
Passed clients, I think that’s fine. I’ve done it and gotten good advice from people, even if they didn’t have availability. Also well worth any managers or above that have left the firm.
Make sure you read up on seeking employment with current clients. Internal guidance, engagement letter, SOW, etc. For example if an SEC client and you’re looking at financial reporting role might need to wait a few months. But other than that go for it. Perhaps play dumb and ask if there are any open opportunities and if there is invite them to call to chat about it. See where it goes from there?
Go through the partner of that client. Best to be upfront with everyone involved.
