It’ll get better. The money will allow you to have any hobby you want 5 years from now.
Get a BMW. Do the Feng Shui in your apartment. Stick around and it’ll be worth it.
Make sure you know what you’re getting into with litigation and that it’s something you’d actually want to do. Same goes for small firm. Fully expect to be staffed on several cases at once and asked to take depositions, go to hearings, and do most of your own admin work in short order. Usually a bigger push earlier on for business development as well.
I will say, as a small firm associate, you probably won’t be getting too deep into legal issues. At least not in my experience. Small firm clients don’t have the money to pay for hours of research on certain issues sometimes, and are just much more cost conscious in general. For me, it was getting high level experience on a lot of different things. It wasn’t until I went to a big firm and did lit that I ever did any type of in depth research on cases.
I would just want to make sure you really know what the hours are. Litigation is pretty unpredictable. What’s the salary difference? It seems like very different work and it comes down to personal preference.
IThings will get A LOT better. Transactional work is busier than it has ever been and the first 3 years of practice are the hardest. Sh*t rolls downhill and so, as a junior, I expected constantly getting slammed with the worst of it all right now. Mid-levels/senior life has its downsides too, but at least you will feel competent by then.
If you enjoy what you do (or think you will) hours aside, try to stick it out as long as you can.
