Short term plans rarely work .
Let’s say you join at 23 from grad school and have a goal to make manager by 27 , senior manager by 30 and Partner by 35 . And for some reason you don’t make manager till you are 28 or 29 . Most people who set those goals panic at that point and lose patience .
Instead if you set a longer range goal like I want to make partner by 35 and keep evaluating every 3 years if you are on track - you probably will make enough course corrections and get there in good time
Careers are not linear . Short term promotions may or may not happen in the time we want . But you can speed up and slow down as needed if you have a long term objective and still make it .
I just used a random example and making partner is not the best goal for everyone obviously
