Cultivating a dedicated meditation practice and finally going to meetings regularly were the two factors that have given me long term sobriety. For me, I feel like those two tools absolutely have to be practiced regularly. I can’t just use them when I “need” them. I have to do them on good and bad days. Otherwise, if I only do them when I am stress/sad/overwhelmed, I’ll only associate them with hard times and start to look down on them.
Before that I could string together a couple weeks of white knuckle abstinence ending in a solid bender when I hit my goal time limit. For me, waiting one or two hours (or days/weeks) didn’t work. Because all that was to me was a challenge to white knuckle it til it was time to drink. I’m an alcoholic. I want to drink. But I’m also delusion-ally proud too, so I’d “prove” to myself that I didn’t have a problem by challenging myself to not drink a while. It wasn’t working long term
Do you have sober contacts? Sponsor? Call them. Text them. Go to a meeting
Read This Naked Mind by Annie Grace. It’s worked for me and several people I’ve recommend it to. In a sense it’s a reverse brainwashing. After you’re done reading it, you suddenly get this feeling of “huh, that’s weird, I kinda have NO desire to drink, what a waste of time that would be”. From there all the whiteknuckling ends.
I wholeheartedly second This Naked Mind! Also I do that all the time, I think “I’ll have a mock tail first and if I really really want a drink I’ll get one.” Never do! It’s been 16 months and counting!!
Don't drink just for today, or just for the hour. The whole basis of the "one day at a time"concept! Been working for me for over 5 years, but without a program with it I'd be miserable.
