Have you considered renting for awhile? I would love to be a renter in this market (unfortunately I own a $2.5M home and another home I’m renting out to someone else). I daydream about how nice it would be to not be tied to a mortgage and not have a big chunk of my net worth in such an illiquid asset.

Yes but the real concern is over instability, not affordability - if the economy really bottoms out and a property owner is out over their skis, I don’t want my family to be caught short suddenly. I guess what I’m really asking is whether others are also feeling like this could be A) catastrophic and B) long term.... or if I just need to step away from news for a while and settle down.

Probably don’t. Be really really boring. Stay the course and invest even when times are scary.

(Pt2) economic depression. Like I’m imagining grapes of wrath stuff. I’m starting to think this will have long legs. We’re thinking abt taking the 100K/each 401 withdrawal as we were affected by covid (job loss). Would use this on mortgage to have as much equity as we can get, and then focus on aggressively rebuilding retirement (hopefully to minimize/mitigate tax burden of the withdrawal, which is spread over 3 years under CARES act.) I want to secure a roof over our head. We would come quite close to outright owning a condo/townhouse, combined with other savings and equity from current house. I know this comes at a very real cost to retirement stability. Dumb? Are we just running scared here? (We’re 40, btw.)

Tks...this is what’s giving me pause. But I’m seriously concerned about potential for long term - and serious - instability. If I own it, it’s mine, regardless of what happens on the street... trying to weigh how to make rational decisions in a very irrational environment.

Lyft driver delayed picking me up 30 min, resulting in me canceling my ride and asking hotel to call me a “yellow taxi” to get to the airport because it was 5am and all ubers/lyfts were 15 min. Specifically said yellow. Hotel calls me a private lux SUV and the driver got out of the car to handshake the man who called and said hi (honestly money couldve been passed). I then get hit with a $180 ride. Marriott website says taxi should be $65. Should I complain or let it go?

Absolutely. Businesses can be ethical by treating people the way they’d want to be treated. 3 ways Airbnb can do this: Aggressively fight fraudulent listers, let Airbnb members control their data (allow data requests/permissioning/deletion from any state or country), and oh - make it easy for people to get their money back if their travel was affected by covid-19. How not to be ethical: marketing ethics vs living them.

- I have a few rentals that bring in ~$1800/mo cash flow, taxes are negligible, Capex incl.
- My paper assets will bring in ~$1200/mo at 3% draw
- I get free Healthcare at the VA
- No plans on kids
- My expenses haven't topped $30k/yr ever
- I could always reenter the workforce if needed (albeit probably not in consulting)

Please point out the flaws here, what am I missing?
