Lay offs aren’t “firings” it’s very different. Be human and know they are going to have specific feelings help them by making sure they know it wasnt anything they did!
Really? Historically, layoffs meant you had a pathway back. This isn’t the case with severance. It is firing, just without cause.
Less is more. Careful not to say anything that will get a lawsuit. Be straight forward, short, and give them their info (pay, benefits, Q&A).
One company I worked with did layoff notification mid-week and the people were laid off were folks that were well liked by peers and direct reports.
What ended up happening is demoralizing the remaining folks for the rest of the week. Productivity was completely trash for 2 weeks.
Stick to the message that HR shares.
But I would also ask HR for a script for the folks still at the company and what tools are available for folks to grieve these changes. You will have a lot of reactions across the emotional gamut. You will be on the receiving end because you are the company face to your employees. So, plan to use company resources as well to maintain your mental health.
You should get a script from your HR department. Just stick to it.
It’s about them, not you. Keep it short. Business like. Keep it moving.
Try to empathize with them that is sucks to get laid off. Have HR on the call, and say to them a BS line like a hope we can work again in the future.
