What are MBBs career progressions from entry level (undergrad) to partner? How long does it take from one role to the next?

Business analyst - 20 months
Senior business analyst/ junior engagement manager - 3 months to 12 months
Engagement manager - 24 to 36 months
Associate partner - 24 to 36 months
Partner

Post-MBA spend 12-24 months as associate before transition to EM with a JEM stint in there too

Post-undergrads skip the post-MBA role entirely and can make it to partner in under 7 years if top performer

^ Because it’s harder to get into D than Harvard?

Yes. I know a rare few who made it at 28

like

BCG path is similar to what M1 describes (some minor puts and takes between levels), but about 12 months longer in total

like

Median in US:
- 2 years associate
- 2 years consultant
- 2 years Project Leader
- 3-4 years Principal

Would be very hard to make Partner in your 20s. Potentially a bit slower than McK, especially for the very very top performers (we bias a bit towards keeping cohorts together). That said, our most junior Partners have way more of a role in governing the firm that McK’s.

I don’t know. I mean yes there can still be a maturity gap, but I’ve only seen the sharpest and most emotionally mature BAs make JEM and most of the time they’re super open to coaching. I always viewed my role as a ASC working with them to be to do my part to help the team and help coach them where I could. They aren’t managing you personally, they’re managing the engagement that you are a part of. It’s an extremely flat and collaborative working environment in most cases. At least in my experience

Shoot yourself? Settle down. We're talking about edge cases anyways.

^^^so you can be a partner at 27/28 years old?

Wow, 29 - wonder why D takes so much longer! Don’t know anyone who has done it at D!

M1, what about for experienced hires? Non-mba

Experienced hires come in as either undergrad role or post-MBA role and then have exact same progression. Sometimes they get a couple months tenure credit. Very rarely they get hired at a manager level, but then they have same progression path as others of their level

Impressive. PwC is now 3 years Associate, 3 years Senior Associate, 2 year Manager, 2 years Senior Manager, 3-5 years Director

Does PWC not have a level between SA and A?

You sound kinda salty BCG2

Not at all. Different tradeoffs. Both in pre-partner progression/comp and in partner comp, y'all have a bigger top-to-bottom spread, with big rewards for the very top performers. We have flatter comp range and governance. I'm a strong/above average performer, and things would work out similarly for me at either.

I also would shoot myself if I was being managed by someone two years out of undergrad. Even in strongest performers, there’s a maturity gap.

I am currently a year from finishing my PhD and was looking at VC's as a career path because I like to do meta-analysis of different climate change techs. I networked with VCs and one of them was receptive but didn't have the budget currently for a full time hire. They said they'd be interested in working with me to do a research paper over the coming semester, and was wondering if I could leverage this into a full time offer?

Is a white paper with a VC going to be attractive on my CV?

Why do leaders keep comparing how “good”the new staff/seniors have it because they make more money starting out then they did and working 55 hours is better than the 70-80 hours they used to work? Instead they should compare what options they have available to them and what their goals are.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.
