AFR and inside retail Australia
AFR
This. AFR produces 2 podcasts, The Fin and Chanticleer, if you don’t want to pay the expensive subscription fee.
Australia is a land of oligopolies. Retail is dominated by Woolworths (grocery & big box retail), Coles (grocery), Wesfarmers (big box retail), David Jones (department store), and Myer (department store). You can find smaller Australian retail brands by looking through the store lists of large shopping centers like Westfield Sydney and designers carried by David Jones and Myer.
E-commerce is paltry here compared to the US/UK due to the lack of population in a large landmass. There is a limited Amazon presence, Wesfarmers bought (and kind of ruined) Aussie e-commerce leader Catch, and Woolworths bought MyDeal to stand up their Everyday Marketplace. But again, it’s an oligopoly dominated by the large retail players.
Tech in Australia is mostly the US brands — Amazon, Google, Uber, DoorDash, etc. There are some homegrown ones like Atlassian and Canva, but Aussie tech only gains unicorn status if it can translate to the US market (since Australia is only ~26 million people).
