A former manager would call me up on a Friday afternoon and say something like “hey great job closing XYZ this week, I used to work in that segment and I know firsthand how challenging XYZ is I just wanted to say job well done, have a great weekend!” - that meant more to me than todays best in class recognition program, the town hall format where leadership reads off 20 names like the hunger games! It’s hilarious to hear leadership struggle to pronounce our names correctly while “recognizing” us…also, money is always nice even if it’s a $100 gift card…when your as underpaid as we are every penny counts !
I believe companies should start encouraging management to start having that conversation with their direct reports. “How do you like to be rewarded and recognized” as some employees enjoy grand gestures while others don’t
I totally agree! I like verbal praise but I work in an environment where getting that is like pulling teeth. They'll do all these weird recognition gestures but not the stuff we actually want!
Because they see employees as numbers and not people. Simple things like asking about their lives outside of work goes a long way. Being a genuine person to employees is huge.
That seems to be the hard part for some people...
Some of my colleagues and I have actually agreed with each other that we don't like having every single deal of ours be publicly shown. We'd rather just be given extra paid time off to make up for all the time we spent on working.
Sometimes, employees' opinion and preference should be considered. They should be asked if how would they want to be rewarded. Some people want to be recognized personally or in private. In that way, the management is not just building a professional relationship with the employee but at the same time it gives the employee the sense of belongingness and importance.
Having a manager to begin with is a good start, but one that will take you from 15k comms to 30k+ is a unicorn.
Seeking recognition with clients Ive found more fulfilling than that of cheesy call outs in a friday roundup. (Who cares, just pay me)
In sales everyone internal is a means to an end.
How about we normalize giving each individual employee a say in how they want to personally be rewarded or recognized? Some might want to have extra PTO, some would like a bonus, and some just want to be praised. It's sort of like a love language.
LOL so you work at Google huh?
Nah, I fear this is a bigger problem :)
Because sales usually make the most in the company so they don’t want to make the other employees jealous
What do you mean it becomes kind of a joke? I think publicly recognizing one's achievement is a great way of showing appreciation. I just need more context to understand where you're coming from.
