What is the appropriate Salary level in dc area for an associate general counsel position in company of around 10k employees. Most of salaries listed on pay scale / Glassdoor are for other positions & not for legal position. 5 to 7 years of experience.

Does anyone else struggle with taking detailed notes during meetings and have tips for improving? One of the partners I work for demands that the most junior associate take detailed notes and circulate them after every call, but I have a hard time comprehending the call if I am taking notes because I’m focused on typing quickly. One of my supervising attorneys all of a sudden is heavily redlining my work by just rephrasing what I originally wrote and adding things I find unnecessary. He didn’t use to redline my work this much and everything ends up being overly dense and wordy. I’ve always gotten good feedback on my writing skills and after 8 months at the firm I know my writing has improved. All other partners and supervisors are actually redlining my work less. Should I be suspicious or is he going through a phase?

Giving notice next week - I plan to give notice to my main partner in person and call 3 others who are in another office who I have a lot of cases with. I have a bunch of partners who I have only one case with and don’t see/speak to much (and who are in another office) - is it ok just to email them? Decision - I was out the door of my nationwide ins dfense firm. Was going to top local firm with a lot more clout where everything would be private pay and I’d be more on bigger exposure cases. However, my firm outmatched the new firm, made a much better bonus structure, and said I could do more work with their complex bus lit group. I’d still likely do about 50 percent ins defense but I really like the partners I work for, and I handle own cases/take depos, and get autonomy. Am I right to stay?

ID Associates…how the hell do you reach your billable requirements? Just started at an ID firm and am lost as to how it’s possible when there is so much daily grind type work that you cannot bill for. Someone enlighten me.

The main partner I work for is constantly trying to set “legal traps” to see if I fall into them. For example, he ask me a specific legal question (to which he already knows the answer) to see if I am able to deliver. I’m so nervous now (this has been going on for over a year) that I often end up falling into his trap by doing (stupid) mistakes. What do you advise me to do? My self confidence is slowly getting destroyed. This does not happen with other partners.

How would you handle not getting a bonus or a raise this year even if you outperformed expectations? I really like my job and the work, but my comp is not matching my responsibilities and performance imo. Partner has ducked me for the last week trying to have a meeting about 2020 productivity.
