I hit my goal, said good bye and never looked back. I retired at 55, and I’ve been traveling the world ever since. All the while learning to live a life of peace and joy. Everyone’s goal is different, but what’s the point of hitting it only to keep working? Unless of course you love what you do. To each their own. Happy F.I.R.E. 💙
Congrats! How old are you now?
I thought this was a pretty good list of why people might keep working:
• they are personally fulfilled by the work
• they want something to do and enjoy the challenge
• they have a goal of leaving larger estate to family
• they have desire for property that current wealth does not allow for, like a jet
• they don't know how to retire ie don't know what to do with their free time
• they are afraid of not having a purpose
• they dislike the company of their family
• they dislike the company of their idle thoughts
• they feel an obligation to achieve a certain work related goal
• they feel an obligation to the team/company they built and do not have a solid hand off strategy
• they are afraid of the loss of prestige/power that a certain role provides
• they are afraid of the unknown
One more - I hit my number, but won't be an empty-nester for another year. I am still tied to home until the youngest leaves for university, so why not work one more year and sock away some additional travel money. I will retire at the same time as my youngest graduates and is out of the house.
I downshifted and enjoy my work.

I think your choices become truly your own. I had the option of taking more lucrative jobs, but ultimately I felt I wanted to work on whatever I wanted to with whomever I wanted. Especially for an IC, you’re always just working on something that someone else wants you to do. I decided it was time to work on what I wanted and take control of my own destiny.

Why would you need something to motivate you? If you have enough money to retire and don't feel motivated to work, then retire.

For me it was building a cushion for unexpected disaster and/or donation to charity. Also wanted to continue working to develop and sponsor my mentorees careers to get promoted to at least MD.
If you have kids, you know the future is less certain for them with the US growing debt and congress’s tendency to kick the can down the road. I’m anticipating higher taxes and less social programs. I hit my FIRE number a few years ago, and now I’m focusing on a good strategy to transfer wealth to my kids in a way that reduces their tax burden, mainly by moving as much as possible into ROTH accounts. I work to build up that cushion for them now.
