Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

It all depends on where you are moving in US. 118k is okay away from the coasts and Chicago. If you’re in or close to any major metro area, 118k could be a tough swing, especially if you’re the sole bread winner. UK might be better…
It's 118k £. I'm living in the UK.
Betting on future possibility of moving to different countries. So I'm trying to stay informed. Thanks for your comments
Is expense the only factor? UK has a much better quality of life then US, especially if you have a family.
Anyway, since you asked, expect your medical expenses to be much higher and education is way more expensive in the US than UK. It depends on how big your family is, the bigger the family the higher the cost.
Thanks for your reply. We are a family of four. I understand the medical and school facilities here. school , the best. Medical, it has its own shortcomings.
Money is not the only factor, but it does help for sure to uplift the lifestyle. The weather here is a bit gloomy. Summer is probably for 2 odd months. I like rain , but not throughout the year.
I like cold weather , but it's too sad here.
I am not complaining, but evaluating how I can provide better. My wife also works just the same style of work as me.
Expenses differ wildly in the US depending on where you live. 118k in a major city like NY or Austin for a family of four is tough if you’re the only one earning, but in a city like St. Louis it will go farther. As someone from the US I’d stay in the UK right now. US is not really the place to be, a lot of issues with uncontrolled violence in the cities it’s especially been scary here in NYC. Women’s rights are not in a good place either.
Summer has been pretty miserable here past few years. Depending on where you live the cold isn’t much better here. It doesn’t rain a lot but that causes problems with drought and fires so…really pick your poison. It’s not as great here as you think it is.
Thanks for the insights. Violence was the biggest reason for me avoiding the US a few years ago.
But looking at the money, TV shows 🙂,
Technology top innovation happening there , I was tempted.
I'm evaluating options for the distant future. That's all.
My question is I have to propose a plan for my family to move to the USA or Canada after getting PR here in the UK. I might get one in 3 years. What are the overall monthly expenses. I know SRE and DEvOps have great growth in coming years and the Compensation I'm seeing in the job postings are super tempting.
