$34k in 1996 after grad school, 295k now.
Inflation adjusted 34k is 72k today.
Showing up. Being better than colleagues.
$58K > $270K over 11 years. Honestly I’d say a big part of it is being excellent at interviewing. There’s also a strong overlap between that and things that make you successful in the workplace. Confidence and communication, essentially.
$44k as a Software Engineer with B.S. in 1999. Never went back for MBA, currently$291k base.
Keys to my success: Strong work ethic, continuous self-improvement, developing personal brand.
On being a consultant: Stay humble and find a niche within your industry. Consulting is a small world so dont burn bridges.
Over 12 years, 4 companies: $33k > $50k > $62k > $78k > $99k > $121k > $134k > $270k > $253k > $259k
Only part of my career is consulting so this is more of an accounting transition as a whole.
CPA firm straight out of college with my MBA and testing for the CPA $46k in 2006. After utilizing strategic job changes the last 7 or so years I'm currently at $155k.
I spent roughly half my career in nonprofit and my comp paid for it. I would never recommend anyone to follow the career path that I did. I'm all for making a difference but limit the time in the learning without adequate pay phase of your career. I'm still playing catch-up.
Apologies, forgot to answer the second part of the question. What got me here was diligence, perseverance, staying coachable, and grit. Some roles were tough and exhausting but they were lesson building phases of life. The good, bad, and awful all taught me lessons and helped me hone my skills and solidify my priorities.
A lot of people are not willing to stay coachable due to ego. This is, in my opinion, an easy way to separate yourself. Own your mistakes and craft your communication around how you've learned and will adapt. Most places don't expect perfection but they do expect growth, learning, and improving.
77k -> 98k -> 115k -> 162k -> 188k -> 218k
9 year span base progression at same company
Work hard, do the right thing, be honest, make yourself invaluable - both relationally and via work ethic. There will be noise - listen when necessary, but put on your blinders when not and just do a good job.
Over 20 years across 3 companies (two in industry and one consulting). $60k > $65k > $93k > $102k $13k (in MBA) > $34k (in MBA) > $138K > $146k > $ 203K > $220K > $133k (6 month sabbatical) > $235k > $350k > $400k > $423K > $564k > $879k > $676k > $958k > $1.2M > $1.5M

PhD - all 1 company over 4 years
135K > 155K > 185k (promo) > 205k > 260K (promo)
After 2022, you really can't compare the salary adjustments during that era with the aggressive growth markets that came before it. We had an unprecedented expansionary market where labor was taken up which resulted in labor competition intensely especially in certain trades.
2018 - $77,500
2026 - $225,000
Started at Accenture for 4 years (77.5K-98K). I left for a Manager role at KPMG (167.5K-179K) for 3.5 years. Recently left for an industry role that’s the 225K.
Started in 2022: 75k > 86k (promo) > 110k (switched firms) > 140k (switched firms).
Only issue is that i stayed at that 86k job for 3 years. Undersold myself, couldve left earlier but happy with the progression overall.
$57k right out of college in 2021 with an accounting degree. Now making $120k after nearly 5 years with the same company.
