What would I do? Well seems like I need to do whatever you are doing.
First off. Congratulations. Looks like you killed it in recruiting.
I don't think there's really any bad options for you. Since I don't know much about the tech role, if what you really want to do corp strategy MBB CAN definitely set you up with the right exit options. I don't think going to the T2 would give you any real benefit (and potentially worse exits) other than short term pay. But the right role in tech can also get you towards corp strategy.
I guess it would come down to what are you more passionate about? Did you enjoy the work/atmosphere in tech?
Thanks so much M2! I enjoyed tech, but it’s not my long term play. I also got a bit bored doing the same thing. I think logically it comes down to MBB vs the T2 manager/sponsorship. Is the brand really worth the step back and foregone 150K?
Any idea what you want to do in the 2-3 years AFTER doing corporate strategy? Not really much of a terminal position to be aiming towards.
If you know you want to work in tech - I’d take that tech offer.
If you’re not sure and you want to keep your options open, then your real question is
what gives me the best experiences over my next 2-3 years, both while in the role and as a means to leverage exit opportunities.
MBB after 2-3 years with 1 promo probably has more interesting exit opportunities to corporate strategy than T2 firms would, but starting as a manager now, you could exit into a more senior role if you find it in a company where you have specific expertise and team management experience.
If you want startup/high growth strategy exits go MBB
If you want big company strategy exits go T2
If you want tech anything, go tech now.
Long term, I’m going to ignore the repayment of the MBA vs the signing bonus as well as salary differences today in the consulting offers.
Long term I think those are probably tie breakers more than decision makers given where you’re at right now - which is in a great spot!
Go tech, obvi
Pro
Go back to your T2 or commit to 3-4 years in consulting at MBB. Being suddenly on the hook for a $150k MBA plus interest is pretty serious. That's a solid year of pay. 3-4 years of MBB comp and bonuses assuming promo in 2 years will make up for the 150k while giving you great exit options. They might even be better than the exits available from leaving your T2 at SM, but that depends on your specialty at T2. If your S&O offer is what you would want in 2-3 years anyway, just try to keep that relationship strong for the next few years as you build skills in consulting. Maybe you can get a similar spot later. You won't be any less qualified then.
If you want to leave in 2-3yrs, MBB may give better exit ops. That said, having you’re MBA paid for is a pretty big carrot. Don’t know if you can go wrong with any of the options.
Rising Star
Go MBB for Corp strategy and connections. Go Tech for $$.
Which MBB? For instance Bain (in N America) has a retention bonus / profit share paid out at 2.5 or 3 years that could be close to a year’s worth of tuition. It’s not widely publicized but it exists. With some YoY pay increases and bonus upside might largely offset sponsorship.
Good to know! Thanks!
Teach me your ways...
I would do MBB. But I ain’t shit. Ima try to do my MBA soon and get into MBB in a perfect world
MBB
Tech
Thanks everyone for the helpful advice! Still torn but I think I’ve eliminated the tech role, so now just MBB vs T2. Appreciate the help!
How old are you? Single/married/kids? If single and no kids I would probably do MBB.
Def a convo to have with your wife. I’m married and same age and I struggled when my husband worked in PE with the long hours, felt like I never saw him. When he was at Deloitte with me at PwC it was perfect though. Maybe do (a) then for the management experience but def consider what your wife thinks
Manager role at (a) night set you up for faster upward trajectory though if you care about that.
