You are extended team for the client. You do as you are told. Not advising anymore. Firm is happy as they are able to make money out of you. You have the potential to make good connections with client though and jump ship if need to

The reality is that staff aug is just a way for customers to buy your services and lower the risk because they can throw you out and just pay for hours clocked . People buy advisory on staff aug basis too these days . Many Firms don’t mind very much - its all green dollars for them .
I've had staff aug roles that were just glorified employee roles and others that required specific skill sets such as being the solution architect on a software implementation run by a competitor. Also had several PM staff aug projects
Avoid if possible. Staff Aug is hell
I am currently in a (not on paper but is a ) staff aug project. I work and report to a senior from another Big 4. Honestly it's confusing as hell and equally stressful.
