What’s it like switching from a big 4 to a mid tier (RSM, BDO, GT)? Culture wise, hours wise? Is it more relaxed or more stressed at a mid tier?

I think overall it's better. I get paid more I work less hours overall. I do more things due to smaller teams... less stuff to delegate I would say is a negative. Culture it's all meh to me. It's fluff it doesn't mean much. I am overall less cranky from working crazy hours week after week for the big four. My biggest complaint is the amount of extra time spent on admin things is annoying as we don't have tons of tools to make life easier.

Agreed. Absolutely awful

As someone who was formerly at one of those mid tier firms, life has been far better and more money at EY. The other firm was always trying to be like big 4 and go after big 4 clients yet paid poorly. The micromanaging was also over the top.

I moved from big 4 to a top10 and I’m happy about it. Hours are kind of less but you have to work on more clients that are smaller and don’t have as good accounting systems. Money is much better though and I don’t feel as unappreciated.

Can say I’m working more than my friends at big 4 and on top of making less to begin with, they just cut our pay, don’t see myself staying here long term

I think it depends on what city the mid tier firm is located. I work at the GT office in Houston and we have some Fortune 500 clients and we also have middle market clients. For the most part I work on a Fortune 500 oil and gas company. Your experience at a mid tier firm will depend on the engagement your on.

like

RSM...I was really disappointed with their technology. It was clunky and slow. Took awhile to get used to.

Depends on every office. It was disorganized and convoluted infrastructure. Hours were the same. You would get comments from managers if you didn’t stay past 11PM. God forbid if you had an emergency dentist appointment during busy season. You were expected to postpone anything that goes on in your personal life after busy season. Yes stress. Partners more approachable and open door. Colleagues were nice.

Culture - happy hour every Friday. Some events. That’s it, no perks but accolade points which you rarely receive. Whoop de doo!

I went from B4 to mid tier back to the same B4. It may have been because I am more specialized, but I agree with the above. Hours were about the same, client data was worse, budget were smaller, and raises were smaller. Overall, while I have my issues with B4, I at least think we have better resources and overall compensation.

like

BDO has their employees taking a 5% paycut (lowest level, goes up depending on how much you make, CEO made an announcement yesterday that there is no telling if there will be raises or bonuses), if you’re below a manager your max PTO days that you can accrue is 12 days, after that you’re “donating them”. Even if you have PTO scheduled, there is a chance you won’t be able to take it..

like

Seriously? BKD you can accrue up to 160 hours before you start to lose it... Once you make either M or SM can accrue up to 200 hrs/yr

Pros and cons with. Went from B4 to mid tier and I do miss the Big4. Most mid tier clients I have found frustrating to work with and the training/communication really lacks. I do not miss the Big4 culture of working to just work because everyone else is

One of the best parts of being at a top-10 is you can really see things and get experience outside of just audit work. For example I’ve been to prospect meetings and represented the firm at industry conferences. At my big four seniors would never be allowed to do that. Maybe managers but not below. Things like that teach real world skills.

If you transition from big 4 to mid tier you will look down on the mid tier firm you join because what youve had at big 4 were probably better - processes and Technology

I switched to BDO for 1 year (Risk Advisory). Work environment lacked structure and was disorganized. Had a bad experience overall. To be fair, I was alone in Risk (everyone else in the department was doing cyber work). I also noticed that every department formed their own clicks (especially in audit and tax) so it was hard to connect with people. Went back to EY when the partner reached out to see if I want to come back.

Don’t go to the any of the mid tier you mentioned or Baker and it should be better. I switched from a top 10 to big4 and am exhausted. When I was at top10 I had my engagements set where I barely worked weekends during busy season. As most people noted the technology will be behind and the compensation will definitely lag but the point of going to mid tier in the first place is better work life balance, not compensation. You want to be “rich” stay at big4.

Non-busy season I couldn’t even tell you as I spent a good amount of hours on self study since there wasn’t much going on. Busy season my first year as manager was between 50-70 but mostly on the 50 side with one offs. I was literally leaving at 8 during busy season and just stopping by on the weekends. With that said, I did have a superstar team. I think I only had one crazy busy season my whole career there and that was 1-2am weekdays and like 9-7 on the weekend for like 1-2 weeks. That’s nothing compared to big4 where I’m pretty much doing that everyday or close to it
