Means it’s time to start looking
Chief
We’re they brought up to your level? Or are they now ahead of you. Not good if the second. Doesn’t mean much for you if the first
Adding to CD1s question: Have they simply been there longer?
Sometimes it’s personal, sometimes it’s not. Quite often, companies want to promote from within because the minor salary bump is way cheaper than hiring at that level from the outside. If there’s only one position, then there’s no room for a team. However, if you’re the one left behind, it’s totally fair to have a conversation with your boss about your career trajectory and what you need to do to be considered for a promotion. You’ll know if they’re bullshitting you or not, so use that gauge on whether you should start looking or not. It’s totally reasonable to request a performance check-in after 6 months, just to see where you can “improve.” This is often just a great way to put yourself back on their radar. Good luck!
How close are you with your partner?
I’m assuming if this happened AND you don’t know what it means, you’re not close enough that they’d have told you for example if they got an offer elsewhere and your company matched it?
Do they have years more experience or have been there longer? If not, are they performing noticeably better than you are? I’d be a bit worried tbh.
The good news is you can be seen one way at one agency and like a star at the next. Go get that new job, crush it, and watch them appreciate you 🙌
This happened to me. My partner and I were at the same level. I was let go two months after they were promoted. Didn’t feel great…but worked out for me in the end.
My last boss had pre-negotiated a promotion at the time they were hired. They were partnered up with someone after they joined the agency and when that 6 months timeline came, they got promoted and their partner didn’t. It actually created a huge rift between them and they had a falling out. But honestly I think they deserved a promotion over their partner. I think if their partner was ready to be promoted also they would have been promoted together tbh.
