Pretty typical for DC firms to have an 1800 billable hour requirement and then a 2000 overall “accountable” hours to receive a bonus. In my experience as a DC biglaw associate, the firms don’t expect everyone to hit hours though and you won’t be fired for it. About 1/3 of associates didn’t receive a bonus at my old firm. On the other hand, lots of us who did get a bonus billed upwards of 2500 a year.
I agree with CC 1 above. But you will find that higher than 1900 is “expected” in many firms. I am in appellate practice at a midsized DC firm, and there’s slippage, so it is common for me to work 11-13 hour days, and through weekends, even when I’m at my most efficient. I bill around 2500 a year. It all really depends on the practice area and the firm culture. Mine just happens to be hopping for the last couple years.
Hard to speak in generalities. There are plenty of firms in DC where 1800-1900 billable hours is the norm. The more meaningful differentiator to consider is midsize vs biglaw, not so much DC vs the west coast.
Like LR1 said, the requirement for biglaw will usually be 1950-2000. Smaller firms can definitely get down into the 1800s. Also depends on your practice area.
