What’s the billable hours scene like in Washington DC? I’m a 2020 grad at a midsize litigation firm in the west. My partner has an exciting job prospect that might take us to DC. I know it will be a challenge for me to even find a job in a pandemic, but lately my biggest concern has been losing my work-life balance. I’m currently at 150 billables/month, which feels perfect. I hear DC can be intense. Will I be able to find a comparable balance in DC or do I need to brace for a major shift?

Pretty typical for DC firms to have an 1800 billable hour requirement and then a 2000 overall “accountable” hours to receive a bonus. In my experience as a DC biglaw associate, the firms don’t expect everyone to hit hours though and you won’t be fired for it. About 1/3 of associates didn’t receive a bonus at my old firm. On the other hand, lots of us who did get a bonus billed upwards of 2500 a year.

I agree with CC 1 above. But you will find that higher than 1900 is “expected” in many firms. I am in appellate practice at a midsized DC firm, and there’s slippage, so it is common for me to work 11-13 hour days, and through weekends, even when I’m at my most efficient. I bill around 2500 a year. It all really depends on the practice area and the firm culture. Mine just happens to be hopping for the last couple years.

Hard to speak in generalities. There are plenty of firms in DC where 1800-1900 billable hours is the norm. The more meaningful differentiator to consider is midsize vs biglaw, not so much DC vs the west coast.

like

Like LR1 said, the requirement for biglaw will usually be 1950-2000. Smaller firms can definitely get down into the 1800s. Also depends on your practice area.

Hi Fishies

I have an offer now with YOE 15 from Redhat (Associate Manager , Permanent WFH ) , Netcraker (Project Manager , Pune ) , BT ( Kolkata , Service Readiness Manager) , which one to choose in terms of WLB , growth , job security and learning . My current org TechM has also matched the Money offering 60% of demand immediately as Hike Letter and remaining 40% as retention bonus to be paid as monthly allowances now and added in CTC next year . Please suggest

Thought experiment for you, fishies.

We all love to hate on billable hours. What’s a real, feasible alternative???

Small agency owner 🙋🏻‍♂️ I’ve wracked my brain and have 3 biz model options, none great:

Billable hrs: Generally accepted. We all know the downsides.

Pay4performance: Big upside potential, tons of risks.

Project pricing: Cloak for billable hours. You have to estimate project cost with something.

Who’s thought of a better approach??? Genuinely curious if there is one.

2) if the reco is to max utilization and be staffed during Ramadan, any advice for balancing fasting + long working hours?
